I'll mention mine:

School zones. Yes, I know we can't be mowing down our youngsters at 60 mph left and right. Still, the feeling of having to drive 15 mph in the morning when you have to get to work is virtual insanity in my books.

2. Oh yes
They can be hell on a suspension.

I remember at my school, we had speed bumps on the road to the parking lot, but it wasn't continious across the road--there was a break in the center. And for a while, the break was just large enough that I could fit my car through the center without hitting the speed bump. It became like a skills game to me--see how good I was at threading the needle.

10. Ha ha
What I like most about my CGILF is that most of the days she is wearing the stupid little green hat which is part of the crossing guard uniform. Except one day she wasn't, and I saw this beautiful woman with this long, flowing reddish brown hair. It's sort of like the librarian in the porno with the bun and the Dame Edna glasses that you know has the wild side to her....

Okay, maybe I better stop now....

6. The smoking ban.
In NJ, they ordered a smoking ban in all public places, EXCEPT the Atlantic City casinos. I guess The Donald, et al coughed up some moolah to keep the smokers happy (although that, too, will be banned on October 15th).

I understand that people who don't smoke, don't want to have to smell it - so I understand the issue of restaurants and malls. But this has gotten ridiculous.

Bars and pool halls have been NOTORIOUS for being places where people kick back and relax with their drinks and smokes; but not anymore. The owner of one of these establishments doesn't even have the choice to make it a smoking bar, or a non-smoking bar. Even worse is the sports/concert stadiums. Our stadiums aren't domes - there is plenty of ventilation - and yet we can't smoke. Brilliant.

Every other weekend, my boyfriend and I have two days to ourselves while my kids are with their dad. We like to go to a nice restaurant and enjoy the food and ambience. Enter the family of five - which includes a child who decides to run around the dining area, and an infant who screams bloody murder the entire time. Who the hell wants to listen and deal with THAT shit? As a mother, I understand that you can't predict when a baby is going to decide to throw a hissy fit, but at the same time, many couples like to go out on dates and spend time together away from their kids. The high-pitched scream of one little baby can completely destroy an otherwise enjoyable evening of an entire restaurant full of people.

This is where legislators have taken it too far. What they SHOULD have done to keep everyone happy, is given the go-ahead to give any and all business owners the right to place restrictions on their establishments. If they had done THAT, there would be a place for EVERYBODY to go that would suit their needs.

8. As a former smoker, I feel for you..
But after having regained my sense of smell, I can tell you that even in a ventilated stadium, breathing someone's smoke makes me gag. It's not an inconvenience, it's a real discomfort that can ruin the event, especially if you can't get up and move because you're in an assigned seat. I really didn't get that myself until I quit. What I hope for you is that you'll be able to quit...I enjoy life SO much more now. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it.

11. So people are supposed to leave their kids at home
so that you are spared the minor irritation of a crying baby at the restaurant, but you shouldn't be expected to leave your cigarettes at home so people can go to a restaurant without developing lung cancer?

:wtf:

12. If you had read my entire post,
you would have seen what I was getting at.

Look at the title of the thread. I know it's in society's best interests - but they could have handled it differently (ie. allowing proprietors to make the call on what restrictions their establishments have). I am simply answering the question of the OP.

And if a screaming baby is a minor irritation to you, hey - have a blast; but to people who are spending anywhere from $50 on up to enjoy a good dinner, some wine, relaxation and ambience, AWAY from their kids.....a screaming baby/child ruins it - hence my point about proprietors being able to set the rules.

There can be smoking restaurants, and non-smoking restaurants. There can be smoking bars, and non-smoking bars. There can be "adults only" and "family friendly" restaurants - so it gives the consumer the option of what environment suits their needs.

And FWIW.... the "second hand smoke" issue has been argued among many in the medical community; and I call bullshit on anyone who makes a claim that going out to a restaurant once a month where smoking is allowed, will give them lung cancer. If you want to worry about getting lung cancer, worry about the air you breathe everyday. Don't take my word for it - pull up some state govt reports.

15. I did read your entire post
and I still call bullshit foul on your attempt to equate a crying baby and the inability to smoke in public.

Also, I didn't claim that going out once a month and being near a smoker will give you lung cancer. Your examples included casinos, wherein most people spend HOURS surrounded by large amounts of smoke. Regardless, one doesn't even need to agree with the cancer link to see that smoking causes a health risk. What about people with asthma? Allergies? People on oxygen?

Children, on the other hand, are an annoyance to some, but a health risk to NOBODY.

17. Again - missing the point.
I used a bunch of examples of places that were under the smoking ban.

I never said that casinos should be smoker friendly.

I admitted that banning smoking in restaurants is understandable.

I stated that a screaming baby can destroy a night out for people who are PAYING MONEY to enjoy some peace and quiet.

I am a smoker who, before the ban, wouldn't light up in the SMOKING SECTION if people were eating nearby. I am a smoker who asks people if my lighting up a cigarette would bother them. I am a smoker who doesn't bitch and moan when a particular establishment places restrictions. What I AM pissed off about is that the ban is universal - instead of giving the business owner the choice.

Meanwhile, restaurants, casinos and bars nationwide allow their customers to get hammered and then get back in their cars. Yeah - that makes sense.

But I digress....you would rather attack me than respond to my idea of giving the proprietors the right to place restrictions. Have at it - I'm done. I am not going to waste any more time with someone who picks and chooses what they're going to comprehend out of a post.

I'm just pointing out that it's entirely possible to disagree with someone without being an ass about it. You antagonized someone and then gave a little 'woohoo' when they decided you weren't worth arguing with and hit the ignore button. That seems pretty damn immature to me.

If there's some other perspective that I missed, feel free to let me know.

36. Well, first of all
it was a sarcastic woo-hoo, given because I thought it was ridiculous that I got "ignored" after 2 comments. Perhaps I did react strongly, but I strongly disagreed with the point that was being made.

Second of all, I find it completely asinine that out of all the posts on this board, you felt that mine was SO immature that it warranted comment. I'm sorry that I offended some sort of adult behavior guideline, but really?

I just thought it was tasteless and I thought you were being needlessly rude. Like I said, it's entirely possible to disagree without being an ass. And I'm sorry, but you were being an ass. To what purpose? You're talking to a random person on the internet who you'll never meet face to face. All you've done is convince them that you're not worth talking to. Didn't get your point across at all.

19. I'm with you on the school zones...
...at least where high schools and middle schools are concerned.

I got a speeding ticket once because I have a weird sister who never learned to drive who called me and asked me to pick her up from work. I didn't really feel like it, so I was in a bad move and leadfooted it through a school zone in front of a high school on the road where her place of employment was located. I wasn't even going that much over the speed limit, though. Maybe 5 or 10 MPH. I was thoroughly pissed off.

My thinking at the time was along the lines of, "Hell, if the stupid kids don't know enough to look out for cars at that age, they DESERVE to get run over!"

We have one in which the cross-walk is in the middle of the street! It is not near the light but in the middle of the damn street. So when ONE (not a bunch) of the little darlings needs to cross, they can stop traffic in both directions. Never mind that they could walk the 20 feet to the crosswalk that is at the light, wait for the light to be going their way and then walk the 20 feet back down the other side of the street.

28. I agree
I don't have a problem with the smoking bans in restaraunts and other places, but I have a few dives where I like to putt over to on my scoot and have a couple cold ones. They just wouldn't be the same if they banned smoking there.

Around here, this is one issue that the market seems to be working out well on its own.Smoking hasn't been banned in bars here yet and non-smoking bars are starting to spring up like weeds, offering an alternative for people who don't want to go to a smoky bar.

48. They probably popped up because the owners got the hint that there are enough people
willing to ban smoking everywhere just so they can go out without it. All it took was a few other states to start doing it.

I'm one of those who hates cigarette smoke and would do whatever I can to avoid it, but I don't think that gives me the right to dictate what someone does with their own private business.

I'm surprised it took that long for that sort of thing to become common though. You'd think somebody would have noticed that there is a whole section of society who doesn't go out most of the time just because they're sick of breathing in smoke... and that section of society has just as much money as everyone else who would go to bars/clubs.
