My mother just inherited 22.5 Million Dollars!!! |
|
:eyes:
She is 76 years old, and didn't even know how to double click when she begged for a PC of her own several months ago. I knew it would be a headache to teach her things and how to get around, but I figured she had a right to have one if she wanted one.
I helped her get set up with an email account and Google, a couple other websites that she wanted, and bought her a couple books about the basics. And I told her to NEVER, EVER, sign up for anything unless she showed it to me first. Thank gawd.
She just came and told me she got an email about inheriting 22.5 Million dollars from an anonymous person, from an estate of a person she's never heard of. She was so excited she came to me to borrow some money to pay the fee for claiming the inheritance. Yikes!
:scared:
I am truly happy that email and the Internet world has opened new doors for her and she loves it so much. But that was fucking scary that she might fall for something like that.
Whew!

I've had to bail her out of a couple pickles, but she is pretty good about asking me to look at something first before she gets into any trouble. She's learned a lot, and it does give her tremendous enjoyment, so I am happy for her.
And I'm sure there are still people who fall for scams like that, otherwise they wouldn't still be doing it. :(

Lots of people don't have someone like you to protect them. I hope your mom gave you a big kiss for that one!

5. My 98 YO mom scares me with that too |
|
She always asks about these emails but never starts off thinking they're fake. As long as she's driving and socializing, I don't think she'd do something crazy but there may come a day and that failure to disbelieve is the frightening part.

9. We (halfway) joke that she's going to be visiting US in nursing homes |
|
She's amazing! Right now she's traveling (by train, loves it - hates planes) to visit family down South.
About 15 years ago, I bought her a WebTV (if you remember them) thinking it would be her "last and only" and easier than messing around with Windows and such. She's since gone through it, a desktop and is now on a laptop so she can wirelessly stream her church videos.
Think I'm lying about the nursing home thing? :woohoo:

16. I'm sorry that I didn't make my message more clear. |

You have my condolences for the passing of your father.
My mother has not passed. She is just months into learning how to get around on a PC, and scared me half to death tonight.
But I have it pretty ingrained into her head that she should always ask me to check first before signing up for anything or changing any settings.
She is very much alive and well! :D But thanks for your concern anyway.

15. You should be proud of her for having the courage to get into this. |
|
Not saying you're not proud, just saying you should be. My mother is 80 and she started using a PC about 4 years ago. I think that's real cool. Too many folks of a certain age won't try new things.

17. I am very happy for her! |
|
It's opened up an entire new world for her! And she is totally addicted to surfing the net all day now. And she especially loves email.
I gave her a link to Google when I set her up, and she goes crazy with that! She finds all kinds of shit that I would never dream of looking for.
I'm just glad that she continues to consult me over things like getting an inheritance, or changing her computer settings. She is getting pretty annoyed with the messages telling her she could increase her penis by 3 inches, LOL!

19. Scamming the elderly is big business.. |
|
My elderly aunt spent most of her savings (over $50,000) on bogus "lotteries". We called the police because she was beginning to get phone calls from overseas lotteries. The police came, dialed the call-back number and they were out of business. They talked to her about how the schemes work and how she shouldn't send them any more money. It didn't work; she was convinced that she was about to "win big". It turned out my 90 year-old aunt was a gambler! (She had to go into a nursing home shortly thereater).

22. That's really sad. And I can believe gambling is a big problem for the elderly. |
|
The casino's around here have rows and rows of handicapped parking spaces because so many seniors like to go there.
