You have NO IDEA how much courage it took to make this appointment. This dentist--one of two in my network in town--has advertisements that say he does sedation dentistry. So, I'm hoping he'll agree to do that for me. I have a heart murmur, so I'm afraid he won't. But the fact that he offers it means he knows there are those of us who are terrified of dentists. So, I'm hoping he'll be understanding. I went to a guy last fall--the only other one in town in my network--and he was a big poopy-face about my fears, and about the condition of my teeth. Scolded me and even ridiculed me. Asshole. So, he doesn't get my money. I hope this new guy is better.

So, wish me luck. My appt is at 11:20 Tuesday. I'll need vibes, so I'm putting in my request early. Thanks in advance!!

1. Shit...I've had dentists that have flat out told me that they haven't seen as much plaque
with any of their other patients as they have with me...just STF up, DOC and do the fucking cleaning...YOU KNOW....like I came here for? This guy was a total jerk-off

3. Exactly!! Don't they know you can always go SOME PLACE ELSE?!
I had a gret dentist in Iowa, who told me he never criticized patients for their oral care, the length between appts, anything! He said he went into dentistry to save teeth and help people. Scaring them off wasn't likely to do either thing. He said he would never complain about the condition of my teeth...then he said, "I know other dentists do that, and I don't understand it. The worse your teeth, the more work I have to do. And dental work is my job." Then he chuckled and said, "And I bill by the hour." Which is the point...."just clean the teeth! You're getting paid for it!"

the one down the street is absolutely BRUTAL with cleanings....very, VERY VERY painful procedure and it is standard! They scrape and scrape and wonder why you are wincing? Assholes.....

2. It's my experience that most sedation dentists...
ascribe to the "no guilt" theory of patient relations.

Hope it goes well for you. I've got to go one of these days. I'm not phobic, I just have a lot of dental issues and can't swing the tab to get the 4(plus...I'm guessing at this point) root canals I need, probably another 10 fillings.

6. I was this close (holding fingers very closely) to being a jerk on this post
I was going to dig up some google image of a root canal or something and post it here. But my angels spoke loudly on my shoulder and I decided to not be such a dick.

Good luck!

9. Thank you! I told the receptionist about my fears, and she was very cool.
I have a pretty good feeling about this...as good as I can have about a dentist.

14. Good luck, mycritters2!
I'm a bit of a dentophobe myself, but you do what you have to do. Sedation dentistry is good, but nitrous oxide is better, at least for me.

17. I normally am okay going to the dentist but when I had some major work done
I asked for nitrous and it really did make a difference. The nice thing about it is that you're still conscious, you're still aware and once they take the mask off you're back to normal and don't have the complications of being sedated or being on something like Valium where you can't even drive yourself home after. I don't know if a murmur would make you ineligible but I would think that nitrous would be much safer than sedation in your case. Of course, as always, check with the medical professional but I would encourage you to ask about it. Good luck with the tooth.

16. one of my wisdom teeth broke about two weeks ago.
I put off making an appointment for one week(after it broke, about 20 years previous to that, though!). The pain and the memory of the Tom Hanks Castaway-esque experience of digging the bits out with a toothpick diminished day by day, but still I had to admit what must be done.

If I didn't do anything things will only get worse, and then the others will go, too.

Good luck to you. Good for dumping your dentist that hassled you. I was of that mindset going in to my exam. The Doc was only concerned about what needed to be done, thankfully.

(In the meantime check out the OTC mouth pain medicine at the supermarket. I need it as I have chewed up the gums on the other side of my mouth while trying to avoid my bad tooth side. Numbs it right up.)
