The 33 million dollar nude woman

NEW YORK (May 13) - A Lucian Freud painting sold for $33.64 million at Christie's art auction on Tuesday, shattering the record for a piece by a living artist.


The British painter's 1995 portrait of a nude woman sleeping on a sofa, "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping," sold for just under its high presale estimate of $35 million.

The previous record of $23.6 million was set last November for a Jeff Koons sculpture, "Hanging Heart."

Contemporary art sold strongly, defying erratic financial markets at a $350 million auction marked by a surprising preponderance of American buying.

When Ms Tilley was complimented by the Today presenter on being more attractive in the flesh than in the painting, she replied: "I think all his models are, it's not just me. That's why I don't worry too much, because I think even the thin girls look odd."

Ms Tilley has modelled for Lucian Freud on several occasions. She recalled a time overhearing a critique of her in another Freud painting.

"The man was so mortified. It was the Whitechapel Gallery. There'd been a big exhibition on and my painting had just been finished, so they put it in for the last week.

"So I went with my friends to see it, and there was this man - you know those so-called art lecturers who think they know everything - 'yes, this painting was painted because Lucian hated women, so he put the dog high up and the woman was lying on the floor. The poor thing with all her scabs and spots'.

"I started laughing. He was going 'excuse me madam' and I said, 'well actually that's me'.

I'm doing okay for the most part. Thanks to my shitty insurance, I'm doing a little med juggling right now, so things are a little up in the air. I think I may be a little hypomanic, but I've also got a huge project at work so a little extra craziness is coming in handy.

I may have to do a search for that...

Med prices are IN-FREAKING-SANE lately. My insurance co. quit covering Ambien CR, but before I could get with my doc and plan a med switch I had to buy a couple weeks' supply out of pocket. It was $10/dose, which I thought was ridiculous.

I really hope things are improving for you. Having to pay that much for meds is an outrage, when we can blow billions of dollars a day on wars we have no business fighting in the first place.
