PSA from a self-confessed spelling nazi
I'm sorry, I can't help it, it's a disease.

Rite of passage - not right of passage (unless you're talking about freedom to travel)

Throes of passion - not throws of passion (unless you're talking about rough sex)

Bated breath - not baited breath (unless you're talking to a fish)

Thank you, that is all. :hi:

2. excellent
I had one guy tell me I was doing something "lock, step, and barrel" once, so I asked him to explain exactly where on a gun the step would be found. Then again, this guy was always "taking things for granite" (it's slate, you fool! :p) and has actually used "hugh" when describing something large.

3. Have there been many posts using "Throes of passion"
If so, what board were they on? Clearly there are some good threads I am missing out on.

4. Not many
But unfortunately for me, I stumbled upon them. I know I'm a geek and it's rather petty but spelling errors ruin the whole experience for me.

7. Bear? Bare?
Edited on Sat May-17-08 10:22 AM by Jamastiene
I have two questions for you:
1. The Second Amendment says the right to bare arms. Does this protect us from ever having a law in this country requiring that we wear shirts with sleeves in them?

2. If someone told me I had to marry some wonderful woman I already liked, but they did not like, and I said "Oh, I think I can bare it." (being sarcastic, of course, because I'd actually love that), would that be the proper use of the word "bare" or should I say "Oh, I think I can bear it?"

I hope you realize that I have added you to my buddy list and will now constantly be coming to you to help me remember the difference between conscience and conscious.

9. Answers
1. The Second Amendment protects us from laws outlawing "wifebeaters" as per Elshiva's thread on the subject.

2. In that case, the proper word would be "bare" and would be followed by some naked romping in the throws of passion.

And always let your conscious be your guy. :hi:

11. We dyslexics support the right to arm bears!
...or should that be the rite to arm bears? We'll hold a ceremony and give them a little NRA pin, along with the AK47.

12. Also watch out for these common errors:
Edited on Sat May-17-08 11:29 AM by Lydia Leftcoast
populous="full of people" vs. populace="the population of a place"

expatriot="someone who was formerly patriotic" vs. expatriate= "someone who lives outside his/her native country"

loose= "not tight" vs. lose= "be deprived of"

15. "toe the line" not "tow the line" (ACK - I saw this error in a book yesterday. A book recommending
good books, so presumably the author considers herself a literate person.)

"She wasn't fazed by the crisis", not "phased"

"She pored over the book intently" NOT "poured"

"For all intents and purposes" not "intensive".
