Recommendations for a new vacuum. |
|
I haven't a clue where to start. What do you use and do you like it better than other products. Currently I have a Hoover with attachments. It's bulky and does a ok job, not great. I looked at the Oster and it was light weight, with attachments from a free vacuum, but for the price I don't think so.

3. Just tossed my 14 year old Hoover. |
|
It served me well so I replaced it with another light weight, easy to use, and inexpensive Hoover Elite. It's bagless (easy to empty) with attachments, a self winding cord, and a cleanable HEPA filter. It works great... (really sucks!) and was $89.99 at Costco.

6. I'll post here. I have two. And with the pet hair from the sheltie, I need it. |
|
I had a Dyson and they lie about the no clogs. It's been worth every penny and the second one came with a cordless broom vac, a canister vac and a cordless iron. All wonderful products.

Works great on cat hair. And the dealers will make many minor repairs free. At least, the one around here does.

29. Doesn't it bother you that there are no attachments? |
|
Sure, you get a small one along with it that has attachments, but why didn't they put the attachments on the damn vacuum cleaner in the first place? You have to wrestle with two vacuum cleaners instead of one. I sent mine back.

I'm allergic to everything except maple trees and feathers. Before I got a Dyson, Lelapin had to do the vacuuming when I was out of the house. Too much dust blowing back.
It does a great job but be careful on rugs (especially antique ones). Turn the beater bar of...

It picks the area rugs right up off the floor, even the big ones. I LOVE that vacuum cleaner, though. It's not quite as necessary now that we're down to one dog and one cat, but back when we had three kitties, it was a must-have.

I got mine from amazon.com with a coupon, so I got it for a good price. Very powerful, fantastic suction. I can really recommend it. Only downside, as mentioned above, it is a bit heavy and pricey.

For $60.
It's still working, does a good job.
It's a little red Kemore canister vac.

When I was in the UK, I had an awesome Dyson canister one - but I think it was like $300 or something silly.

Expensive, but totally worth it. Mine's very strong, very very light, and it's about as loud as my ceiling fan set on high. http://www.miele.com/products/index.asp?cat=1&nav=21&oT=26I have this one, which is one of the more basic models: http://www.miele.com/usa/vacuums/product.asp?cat=1&subcat=1&model=292&series=62&menu_id=5&nav=21

17. I don't have any 1st hand knowledge myself,but, consumer reports recommends |
|
CR Quick Recommendations Upright vacuum cleaners
Nearly all full-sized uprights cleaned bare floors quickly and neatly, but carpets remain the toughest challenge for most machines. Top-scoring models deep-cleaned impressively while providing strong airflow through the hose for use with tools.
Most full-sized uprights weigh about 20 pounds. The highest-scoring lightweight upright was the 9-pound Riccar SupraLite RSL3, but it has no tools and was noisy enough that we recommend you wear ear protection to prevent hearing loss during use.
Pay particular attention to our noise ratings if you have bare floors, which echo sound. Many readers also view ease of handling (how easy a vacuum is to carry and the push/pull force required to use it) as important. Choose a model that you have tried out in the store and find suitable to carry and use.
The Ratings rank uprights by overall performance. Quick Picks lists models that blend top performance and value.
Quick Picks
Best uprights for most:
• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 , $300, CR Best Buy • Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 36932 , $350
Both Kenmores are top performers. Also consider the lower-priced Hoover WindTunnel Bagless U5753-900 if you're willing to accept less airflow, more noise, lower brand reliability for uprights, and--as with the Kenmore 36932--emptying a bin. If less weight is worth some trade-offs:
• Riccar SupraLite RSL3 , $330 • Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 , $60 • Hoover WindTunnel Supreme U5458-900 , $130 • Hoover EmPower U5262-910 , $100
The 9-pound Riccar is lightest; also consider the Riccar Supralite RSL4 for its superb carpet cleaning. The Hoovers offer the most value and performance, and the Hoover EmPower folds, though there are more reliable upright brands.

Bought the Eureka Boss Smart Vac, because it's a Consumer Reports Best Buy. Price was $150 at Bed, Bath & Beyond (a BLUE company, BTW), but with one of their frequently-available 20%-off coupons it was only $120.
We're very happy with it.

20. Ironically, the best one is the one that sucks the most |
|
Edited on Tue May-27-08 12:32 AM by dotcosm
Really, it's true.
Me personally, I think Oreck sucks the most, so that's what I have :hi:
Although really, the suckage, for me, is not the most important feature. For me the most important feature is how easy it is to get long hair out of the rolling mechanism, and the path the debris takes - if you have long hair, you need to consider such things or else the motor/rubber thingy can burn out really easily.
Edit to say that I've recently become enamored of the Rainbow one, but it's so expensive that I don't think I'll ever own one unless I find one at a thrift store.
