Has there ever been another group REMOTELY like The Stones?
I'll be the first to admit, there are a lot of stories out there about Jagger & Co. that, true or not, frankly creep me the hell out. Given their rep, one must also admit they've been a musical fixture since the sixties, and their body of work is nothing short of magnificent.

I've been going through what I have of their discography, and I have yet to hear a tune that hasn't seen major airplay at some point in time.

It's hard to fathom that even now they're still going. Mick is what, two hundred years old now?

Their music has been, is, and always will be simply the best.

What's your favorite Rolling Stones tune? Here's mine:

5. Hard for me to pick a favorite.
Sympathy is probably their best overall song but, gun to my head, my favorite is "Sway".

7. Their song that hit me the hardest is "Paint it black" which is played after Full Metal Jacket
Edited on Fri Oct-31-08 10:49 PM by DS1
I watched that movie in the theatre with my parents while I was already signed up and ready to go to Marine Bootcamp.

Boy, was I surprised to find out the movie version was 1/10th the intensity of real boot camp. It's still a great song.

14. I've always wondered if they knew what they had
when they cut it. If I'd been in the studio and heard the master, I think I would've just died right then and there.

It has every element of great Rock 'n' Roll, and I can't think of another single song about which that can be said.

It's perfect.

17. Cultural impact? Benny Goodman.
Benny Goodman Orchestra Sing Sing Sing

Carnegie Hall concert

In bringing jazz to Carnegie, , in effect, smuggling American contraband
into the halls of European high culture, and Goodman and his 15 men pull it off with the
audacity and precision of Ocean's Eleven.

19. I think the early Flaming Groovies were remotely like the Stones
even sounded like them on occasion! But in the long run, they have turned out to be totally obscure...

They're how all other bands learned to act.

28. The Stones were proto-punk in their early days: scruffy, no suits, sneeringly intense...
One wag wrote, "The Beatles play from the brain, and the Stones play from the groin."

Of note, U.S. garage bands were able to master the Stone's rehash of American blues standards with a lot more ease than they could, say, the Beatles complex harmonies.

The Stones also buried the uniformed, suited look for all time. Early on, the Stones did have matching suits, but by the time they came to America, they were a scruffy lot who frightened our parents.
