Holy CRAP! Neil Young plans to charge $432 for "Archives Volume 1." |
|
According to the new Rolling Stone (print edition, no link).
10-disc set, $432 for Blu-Ray, $345 for DVD, and "eventually in CD and download formats."
It's his right to charge whatever he thinks he can get, but has he picked up a newspaper lately?

and it's only "volume 1".
I mean it's a complete discography with tons of live shows, right? Like the full bootleg collection?
I've been kinda out of the loop on this one.
How much material does 10 blu-ray discs hold? A lot, sure, but not EVERYTHING, not by a long shot.
Hmmmmm...

8. A dual-layer Blu-Ray disk holds 50 GB of data. |
|
A standard DVD holds just short of 5. So, 10 Blu-ray disks holds a little more than 100 DVDs. I don't know how much Young has out there - I know it's a hell of a lot - but I can't imagine how long you'd have to spend on stage or in a studio to make 100 DVDs-worth of usable material.

3. 431? Fuck no, we'll never make a profit! |
|
433? Whoa, I'm not trying to alienate my audience.
432? THAT'S IT. IT'S SO... PERFECT.

5. Massive eye-jab to the people who were paying Neil's bills... |
|
...back in the days when he was scarfing down the $1.99 eggs, toast & coffee special at ex-wife Susan's restaurant in Woodside (see the "Skakey" bio for details).
I've got to believe he knows this sucks and is planning to do it anyway. What a disappointment.

4. His fans have been waiting for this for years and he knows it. This is too costly. |
|
If true, Uncle Neil is forcing his fans to get copied versions of this- it's too expensive.

9. I'm looking forward to the alternate takes of "Kinda Fonda Wanda" from "Everybody's Rockin'" |
|
Years later, Neil got a BIG laugh out of the fact that David Geffen sued him for "10 years of Neil Young albums that didn't sound like Neil Young."
If ANY of the bio "Shakey" is to be believed...and author Jimmy McDonough WAS an "insider"...the two major impressions are that Neil is a genius, and Neil is a prick.
The book really stops abruptly. That's because initially Neil granted unlimited access to band members, friends, etc.
Then he read the first draft, and slammed the lid on the cookie jar.
The truth hurts.

13. Shit. People will plop down $100+ to see him play live so why not? |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 12:38 PM by Mike Daniels
If people are willing to slap down over $100 to see Neil play on stage for 2 hours I guess the price for the Archives is a pretty good deal considering the amount of live footage that's supposed to be on it.

For that price, it should be copies of all of the multitracks for me to play with.
