Why is it OK to hate fat people? |
|
I just don't get it....
But I see a lot of that
Don't get me wrong, I think obesity is a problem that needs to be solved
But blaming the obese is not the answer.

4. Some people have to have something which to belittle others. |
|
Bodily appearance is not protected by any laws. Yes it is a problem needing solutions. The medical community has some of the worst offenders against fatties. I forget how many cardiologists have looked at the obese with disdain. Any other physical affliction would be treated with compassion and caring.

5. Disease or physical imperfection = moral failure |
|
is very old in western culture.
Victims of leprosy were for ages seen as unclean and therefore morally suspect.
The same is true for being fat. Thin is the standard, so fat people are seen as morally suspect, because we all know being fat is something you "decide" to be. :eyes:

10. Because it is always easier to blame the victim |
|
Whether it be the workers at GM or the woman who has been raped, it is easier to suppose that this is wholly the fault of the afflicted, because that absolves us of either the responsibility for a world that is so depraved, or the obligation to help the afflicted. Instead we can sit smugly secure in our self-righteousness until something happens to us.
Yes, personal responsibility has a part in some cases of obesity, but to use it as a bludgeon and an excuse to deride all who suffer from this condition is akin to the judge who acquitted the man in Italy of raping his secretary on account that her jeans were too tight. Did she choose to wear the jeans, yes. Did she choose to get raped? (do I really have to answer this?) Is obesity caused in part by destructive decisions? Yes. Are these decisions made in a conscious attempt to be degraded and disrespected? (If I have to answer this...)

19. It's not, though if you look at GD right now, it might appear to be so. |
|
I'm thinking of a new tactic right now. I hate folks that mock folks that are overweight. Since I'm pretty ripped, I'm going to go to GD and start pointing at everyone ripping on "fat people" and telling them that to me, they're fucking fatasses. Weak, pathetic fatasses. Isn't judging others fun? :eyes:
