I'm not sure what kind of nail clippers you use, but back when I groomed dogs, cats, ferrets, pigs(well, I only bathed the pet pigs)...and other animals, I had a trick I used for the ones with black nails. I used the nail clippers with the handles that resemble a pair of wire cutters, only shaped different at the end. Later I moved to those that have the slide action thing going on, because they pinch the nail less.
Before you squeeze down on the nail, lightly slide the blade along the underside of the nail. You will feel a catch, like a rough spot. It has a "splinter" or "catch" feel to it. Go out (toward the END of the claw) from that about 1/8" and you'll have it right. Usually, that rough spot is the point where the nail is beginning to shed.
At least that is how I always did it and I only ever quicked a dog once and that was by accident, because the dog jumped and I hadn't been doing it long.
