1. I guess the recession/depression hasn't hit the Yankees yet
but, better CC than Steinbrenner.

3. The Yankees are recession proof
Mainly because they are good at swindling NYC into paying for everything. The city is covering the vast majority of the team's stadium construction costs. The Yankees did not need a new stadium, and if they wanted one soooo badly, then they should've paid for it themselves. Why is public spending only okay when it goes to something private?

24. Because C.C. Boobcock or whatever his name is needs $161 million.

:(

See, that's worth their getting a stadium at their constituents' expense (sans discount seats too)

1-3, 6.24, and Hanky Boy goes over the edge.

Sabathia had trouble keeping it together in freaking Milwaukee. This is going to be entertaining.

14. He was basically the only reason they got to the playoffs.
They fired their manager in September, as I recall, and the big man carried them into the postseason.

25. Yes, but in the last two years he was terrible in the playoffs
That's when you need that $160 million really working for you. Once the Yankees make the playoffs we'll know just how good a deal it was.

15. You should be able to...
apparently you're bidding against yourselves...and possibly the Nats if they lose out on Teixiera.

I spent all day reading the various Hot Stove Reports because I don't feel like writing. (Retrospectively, writing might not be the best career-idea for someone with un-medicated ADHD.)

A solid starter who can also hit? I'd have taken him in a New York minute.

(Pun intended.)

Bleacher seats will only be $250 because they are asking the city to pay for the rest. :eyes:

With Sabbathia and Peavy in the lineup they would have been absolutely unstoppable. :banghead:

17. If there is a bright side for you...
you're not saddled with the back-end of that contract.

The last three years of a seven year deal at an average pay of $18M for a 300lb.+ starter with a lot of mileage on his arm who will be on the wrong-side of the traditional peak-age for a starter and hates conditioning? The words train-wreck come to mind. Do you really want another Bartolo Colon?

Don't get me wrong, I'd love C.C. on my Red Sox but I wouldn't have gone 1 day over 4 years and neither should have anybody else...the Yanks are desperate for starting pitching (reports are that their internal assessment is that they needed 3 quality arms out of FA for the rotation to be competitive) and they overpaid to make sure they got their man.

30. Certainly true.
I never looked at it that way. CC is getting older and he could be another Bartolo, which would be a bad thing. If this offseason has taught me anything, it's that "for the love of the game" no longer exists and "for the love of the almighty dollar" has taken over full force.

Scott Boras ( :puke: ) has been touting these fucking draconian contracts for his players and I think a lot of the teams that are going to be signing them will really regret spending that kind of money for short-term players, especially with the economy the way it is. 2009 is certainly shaping up to be an interesting season.

18. Personally I think they overpaid for him
that's not to say I wouldn't want him in my rotation but nobody can convince me that he is worth more money than Johan Santana, plus with that physique of his I'll take my chances that Santana will stay more healthy in the long run

21. There are at least half a dozen better pitchers
Cliff Lee
Roy Halladay
Jon Lester
Johana Santana
Josh Beckett
Jake Peavey
Ryan Dempster
Tim Linecum

CC is about three Ring Dings away from breaking down and turning into a very expensive back of the rotation guy.

34. as a Yankees fan
I don't like it. First of all the attendance will drop last year as Wall Street will (hopefully) not use taxpayer dollars for luxury suites at a baseball game.

I've already been priced out of yankees games, and i'm a lifelong fan.

I guess it's the Trenton Thunder for me now.
