What does "cleansing of the soul" mean to you in non-religious terms?

Heard someone use this phrase recently, but not in a religious sense. He said something like, "That experience/Those years was/were a "cleansing of the soul" for me."

It sounded like something that positively affects one's world view or pholosophy...
