Yay, I figured out where the leak in my house was coming from, |
|
and it's not nearly as bad as it could have been. (not even close!)
My house is 3 levels, with most of the ground floor being taken up by the garage, but it also has a bonus room. On Tuesday, I went in there and noticed the ceiling was sagging in one spot, and obviously damp. The spot was both under a bathroom and near an exterior wall, so it looked like it was either going to be a plumbing problem, or a leak somewhere in the wall or roof. So after stressing about it for a day, my Dad came down and helped me remove the ruined drywall, and after some puzzling experimentation, (the wall was completely dry, and we got no hint of a leak when running any of the bathroom fixures) I finally got the idea to dump a bucket of water on the bathroom floor.
Turns out, some caulk around the toilet had given up. So, I still have to replace the drywall in the ceiling, and fix the caulking, but it could have been much, much worse.

I'm glad that you figured it out, and it sure could have been a lot worse!
We had a leak in our shower that showed up in the ceiling of the room underneath...our family room!
Luckily the leak was small, and easily fixed.
The ceiling took more work, but it too has been restored to its former glory!
Good luck fixing your drywall!

2. Well, that's the other bit of luck. |

My Dad is retired, and spends a bunch of his free time working for Habitat for Humanity (and has been doing repairs on his own homes for 30 years or so). So he likes doing stuff like that, and is pretty good at it.
He's coming down on Monday to help fix the ceiling, once the joists that were exposed to the water have had a chance to dry out completely.
I was pretty stressed - With the unusually high snowfall we just had in Seattle, I was worried that we might have developed a leak in the roof, and water was traveling down the walls, or something like that.
I know how tricky things like that can be to truly fix. Our last apartment building before we bought our house had a roof that would leak after a big enough storm, probably about 4 times in 3 years. They tried to fix it every single time it happened (and these were conscientious landlords too - the building was a 1917 building by a locally famous architect of that era, and the owners take really good care of the property), but a storm with enough rain and wind would find a way inside.
