My dog is far more protective than I realized |
This morning around 5 am I noticed that Haydes wasn't sleeping next to me on the bed like he normally does (sorry ladies, we're a package). I freaked out a little so I went wandering around my house and found him sleeping on the couch in the dark. I must have been quite stealthy - he didn't realize I was in the room. As I started to turn to go back to bed, Haydes woke up, and not realizing it was me, began a low growl as he stood up in an offensive posture. He was going to attack. I quickly identified myself and he came frolicking over to me as if nothing happened.
I'm not worried about him ever turning on me. I have him well trained despite his spazzy nature. He knows 25 commands and we can read each other like books. But still... I kept thinking about a 90 lb German Shepherd lunging at some idiot trying to break into my house. Best home security system money can buy, I suppose. You can't get that kind of mileage out of a cat or bird, that's for sure.

1. I haven't had my coffee yet. I read that as "proactive" |
Obviously a wee too much corporate-speak floating around in my brain as well. Heh.

2. you don't have to train a German Shepherd to be defensive |
It is in their genes, bred into them. My German Shepherd didn't have to be taught anything about being territorial as hell, or being defensive of his family.

4. Way back, when we bought our house |
We were getting phone calls from all these security companies trying to sell us an alarm system. the calls stopped when I told the guy we already had an alarm. He asked "What kind of alarm do you have?" My reply "It has fur and sharp teeth" We never got another call after that. At one time we had 8 dogs. Now we're down to five.
