Discovered: A Leech With Giant Teeth That Lives In Your Nose |
This is Tyrannobdella rex, a newly-discovered leech species named for its terrifying, human-looking teeth. And now scientists know more about why it wants nothing more than to swim up your nose or into your mouth. http://io9.com/5516604/just-discovered-a-leech-with-giant-teeth-that-lives-in-your-nose:bounce:

6. On the plus side, the first documented case of human infestation was in 1997 |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CandiruIf you'd asked me, I would have thought that the damned things were infesting everybody for centuries. Little did I realize that they're a delightfully recent addition to things to worry about when I pee in the Amazon.

14. Note the weasel word "documented" |
Trichomycterid catfish have been crawling up men's penises for centuries. But in the bad old days before Modern Medicine, we didn't have all that fancy stuff...if a fish crawled up your urethra and put his spines out, you just pulled out your knife, cut your dick off before your bladder exploded (the fish will completely block your urethra and you can't get the bastard out because of the spines), stuck a band-aid on it and went about your business. The next week your friends will all be talking about you...
"Did you hear that Old Joe cut off his dick with a Bowie Knife last Tuesday?" 'Peed in the Amazon, huh? Well...gettin' a candiru up your pecker, that happens.'

15. I think the natives had an effective extended traditional treatment that |
involved certain plant products and didn't involve amputation

17. There is a plant-based treatment, yes |
but the thing is, the pain this fish causes makes amputation look like a REAL good treatment option. People who have had Prince Albert piercings (it goes through the lower side of the urethra) report it's not pleasant (okay, it hurts like hell) to get your urethra pierced with one needle. Imagine having it pierced with eight to ten of them, and you know what this fish does.
