Poll question: How would you react to this HR problem?
Edited on Thu Jun-24-10 08:51 PM by OmahaBlueDog
You are the owner of a fast food franchise. Your manager (a "him" for simplicity) has done a good job running the place for over three years now. The place is well maintained, reasonably profitable, and not receiving complaints. During an audit, you learn that the manager has been regularly getting groceries from your restaurant supplier and charging it off as inventory. This has been to the tune of $25-$50 per week, and it has gone on the whole three years. As far as you know, there are neither starving children, nor some worthy charity in the equation. Your manager makes salary & benefits at or above the industry standard.

Your response would be:

This is loosely based on a story an auditor I know told me.

1. That is definitely a firing offense... he his is stealing from A... there is a B and C
that you haven't found yet.

Also employees that steal are much more likely to sexually harass and commit other workplace violations.

2. That is a firing offense - no question
$50 a week for 3 years is $7800.00. That is not chump change and it has to be dealt with swiftly and mercilessly. The manager you described is flat out a thief.

5. Fire him. We're talking thousands of dollars--grand theft in the aggregate
A cashier would be fired outright (possibly with police involvement) for stealing $25 out of a register just once.

There's no excuse for a manager doing this.

7. Yes, good point.

If a cashier would be fired for much less, the manager should be fired for this.

Also, if you know about it, half the rest of the company probably does too. It undermines your authority as well as his. How is he supposed to supervise employee theft when he commits it himself? And what does it say to everyone else if you turn a blind eye to it?

And yes, if you found this, he's definitely skimming off the top in half a dozen other ways too.

In this economy, you should be able to find someone honest *and* capable for less than the industry standard.

8. Fire the manager for certain. Probably give the auditor a bonus - that seems like
a pretty obscure thing to catch if the thieving manager was even halfway devious about it...

10. Other. Be thankful that your "at or above the industry standard"
Peon (and face it. By Fast Food industry standard, it's exploitation wages. Anybody that disputes that is a Feudalist pig) who you've exploited for three years doesn't gun his way into your house, roast you in your own fireplace and feed your carcass to your children before disemboweling your wife in front of them.

That's what the French did to their overlords.
