John Phillip Sousa Marches
On the second day in Great Lakes Navy boot camp 1951 the Company Commander (Bosnmate First Class John Crater) says, "Anybody play a musical instrument?" A few of us raise our hands and are are sent to a large building to try out for the marching band.

An old chief gives me a trombone holds up a piece of music a; Sousa March. I play a few notes. He says, 'You're in" So I spent all of boot camp playing John Phillip Sousa Marches.

We played them over and over and marching here marching there. The "Stars and Stripes Forever" and forever and forever. Such fun!

I got them playing now on my CD playing machine. It is all I can do to keep from jumping up and marching around the room!

"Can you hear them? No! Wait! I turn them up louder and louder!"

2. My Dad LOVED Sousa marches
He had many records, and he played them VERY LOUD.

They are woven into my childhood memories. :-)

4. I played flute and piccolo in band
But I was not the 1st piccolo. The night of one concert including S&S forever and a peice with a piccolo solo, the first chair did not show up, due to a car accident (fortunately she was not badly hurt). But I freaked pretty hard.

I cannot claim that it was my best performance.

You get Gold stars for trying. The baritone has a beautiful part in there also. If one can call the music beautiful. I think it is!

6. I did too!
First flute and piccolo. My solo in S & S forever was the high point of my short-lived musical career. I suspect I could still play it if I had to. Love love love Sousa music!
