5. That's not really even forbidden, grammatically speaking
It just bugs some folks.

I'm much more concerned about "comprise" being misused.

11. Actually it IS forbidden gramatically speaking
It's just that people don't seem to diagram sentences anymore..if they did, they would notice their preposition was missing an OBJECT.

16. No, it's not "forbidden"
That "rule" of prescriptive grammar and the split infinitive proscription were both promulgated by Robert Lowth in the mid-18th century. He, along with other Enlightenment regulators, was attempting to apply the rules of that logical language Latin to English, which is notoriously sloppy. But the attempt itself was doomed (because English has no official regulatory body like those of Spanish and French)and misconceived (because Latin is an Italic language and English is Germanic--the rules that apply to one language family do not necessarily apply to the other.)

However, I would agree that, if you're writing for an audience of sticklers, you ought to follow Bishop Lowth's lead. However, in speech and in flash writing like emails and web forums, I'd say you should loosen the heck up.

9. What are you talking about?
Do you realize the situation that would put us in? By asking for a ban on ending sentences with a preposition, you'll never realize what you're up against. You'll drive many potential new DUers away. It's these folks whose opinions we count on. This is a critical issue to mull over.

Actually, It's one of my pet peeves as well. :P

12. Yes!
The ending of a sentence with a preposition is something up with which DU should not put!

13. A man from a small town
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 04:23 PM by DiverDave
was accepted at Harvard.
While touring the campus the first day, he asked a preppy looking fellow " Excuse me, could you tell me where the library is at?"
The preppy young fellow put his nose in the air and sniffed "here at Haaavaaad we never end a sentence with a preposition"
The man said "I do apologize, could you tell me where the library is at, asshole?"

Bada boom, thank you, be sure and tip your servers

14. Then what should I end a sentence with?
Oh, that is right, all sentences end with punctuation. . .so technically, you are upset about bad punctuation, not bad grammar?

15. No, it's the grammar
Most of us seem to have mastered the question mark. I recognize this is an informal discussion board, so there is no need for the comma nazis to goose-step across our posts.

23. Sentences end in punctuation
Since all sentences should end in punctuation, then your question is irrelevant because questions do not end with a word they end with a symbol.

So if you are upset on how people are ending their sententences, then you are technically upset with the punctuation.

Maybe the subject should be "Should ending sentences with or without punctuation but using prepositions as the last word be banned on DU?"

Or Better "What should we end our sentences with?"
