Feel free to include his VU numbers; I'm sure Warhol won't mind. As usual, I'll make a poll if this gets any noticeable traction.
On a day-in day-out basis, I'd probably go with the explosive, transcendent, somewhat endless live version of "Sweet Jane" (Who's playin' them geetars?), but just to be non-conformist, I'll go for "Dirty Boulevard" this time.

14. Really loved the live version, I think from Farm Aid |
|
He did less well on Suzanne at that gig, unfortunately taking to shouting instead of singing, but the live version of New Sensations was what made me go out and get the record.

Y'know some people got no choice when they can never find a voice to talk with that they can even call their own.
So the first thing that they see, that allows them the right to be, why they follow it. You know its called "Bad Luck"

"New York" is my favorite Lou Reed studio album, and "Rock and Roll Animal" one of the best live albums of all time.

We're Gonna Have a Real Good Time Together are my less obvious picks. My obvious picks are Waiting for the Man and Sweet Jane. And Heroin. And Sister Ray.

Lou did an appearance at B&N at Union Square. Seen Lou dozens of times, in concert, in movie theatres, in elevators, etc. Wasn't going to stick around for autographs or any such. On my way in I passed a rack of postcards. One was a photograph of the streetsign of the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 125th Street.
I had to get him to sign that!

One of the best songs about a masochist that there is. The title comes from the biography of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, from whose name the word masochism is derived. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0922233012/002-5910472-6669604?v=glanceedit: added link

IIRC, I think the guitarist's name is Steve Hunter.
I'm also partial to "Walk on the Wild Side."

23. It was 1969. A really chemical night at the Avalon Ballroom in SF... |
|
...The Velvets were about to play. Doug Yule was in the band then. People tuned up. I don't know what they do now. Lou was wearing a midnight blue velvet tuxedo and playing a black Gretsch guitar with red foxes painted on it. He stepped up to the mic to do the 'testing one two three' thing and I guess he wasn't grounded...a blue spark connected his face to the mic and he was blown back a few feet. It hardly fazed him. He said "Things like that don't bother me anymore'.
They opened with WAITING FOR THE MAN...
