As DUers are aware, the increased danger of fraud with the move toward touch-screen machines which record the vote electronically (i.e. "DRE"-type voting machines with no paper trail) is a big problem that many people are concerned with.
The Verified Voting organization needs volunteers (one from each state) to hunt down information as to what the states are doing to meet HAVA requirements, and if in the course of attempting to meet HAVA requirements, are making poor decisions w.r.t. voting machines.
If you are knowledgeable on this issue, or if you are willing to educate yourself, and if you have a little time to spend to hunt down the information on what your state is doing, www.verifiedvoting.org can use you! Verified Voting was founded by Dr. David Dill, Computer Science professor at Stanford. In addition to his day job, he is on the California Secretary of State's Ad Hoc Touch Screen Task Force and travels around the country speaking and educating on the inherent dangers of current DRE and voting machines.
Go to the page www.verifiedvoting.org/states.asp and follow the guidance you'll find there. You can get lots of background info on the issue starting from the home page of this website. To find out what your state is up to, I suggest you would start with reading your Secretary of State's web page, then giving their office a call and just asking what's up. You might also search your state capital's local newspaper for articles on voting and election machines. And of course, use Google.
On my own, I've been active on the voting machine issue for many months, and I just did this for the state of Minnesota. All I did was put the info together in an email and sent it in. A volunteer updated the web page. You can see the MN page at
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/stateview.asp?state=MN. Nothing fancy...
Before you start, email keone@verifiedvoting.org and tell him what state you want to work on.
