Superdelegate Endorsement
TOPEKA—Kansas lawyer and Democratic National Committee Superdelegate Lawrence Tenopir today endorsed Governor Dean.
“I am grateful that Larry has joined our campaign to take our country back,” Governor Dean said.
In making his endorsement, Tenopir cited Governor Dean’s straight-talk and imaginative campaign as two of the reasons which make him the most electable of the 2004 Democratic candidates. "In over 30 years of involvement in Presidential campaigns, I've never seen anything like the enthusiasm and dedication of my fellow Dean supporters. Governor Dean is rewriting the rules of Presidential politics. I'm excited to be a part of the campaign."
As a superdelegate for the Democratic Party, Tenopir will deliver his vote for Governor Dean at the Party’s nominating convention, which will be held in Boston next July. A superdelegate is an elected official or political party leader who attends the convention, but who does not have to commit to his or her vote until the Convention.
Tenopir, an attorney with Tenopir & Huerter, has been active in the Democratic Party for more than three decades--beginning when he joined the Kansas University Young Democrats in 1968. More recently, he served as the Kansas Floor Whip for Al Gore during the 2000 Democratic Convention. He is currently a member of the DNC Resolutions Committee.
“Larry Tenopir’s commitment brings Governor Dean one vote closer to the 2,159 votes he will need to get the Democratic nomination, but just as importantly, Larry will represent the campaign and help organize for us in Kansas as we build the greatest grassroots campaign presidential politics has ever seen,” Dean for America Campaign Manager Joe Trippi said.
