Vestas Books $1 Billion+ In Wind Turbine Orders In Less Than Two Weeks - Bloomberg
Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the world's biggest wind-turbine maker, will deliver 33 turbines to a wind farm in Kansas, its seventh order in the last two weeks.

The V90-3 megawatt units were sold to RES Americas Inc., a unit of the U.K.'s Renewable Energy Systems Ltd., Vestas said in a statement today. The company will also deliver 27 V52-850 kilowatt wind turbines to Alerion Industries SpA for an Italian project, it said in a Dec. 28 statement on its Web site.

Randers, Denmark-based Vestas has won seven orders since Dec. 21, four of which are in the U.S., one of its fastest growing markets as subsidies and incentives for wind energy spur demand for turbines. Each order is worth about 1 million euros ($1.45 million) per megawatt, bringing the total value of all seven contracts to about 903 million euros, Kitty Groen, an analyst at Handelsbanken Capital Markets, said by phone today.

``Vestas is in a very positive stream of good news, and it looks bright for the North American continent,'' said Groen, who recommends buying the shares. ``They have a very good order pipeline in the U.S., and I think they will be able to build up and maintain a strong market share there.''

2. I don't think we're incapable of making them......................
We're just incapable of making them AND selling them at a profit. Someone else makes them cheaper.

That's a little simplistic, but close enough for this forum. There are issues of cost of labor, cost of capital, acceptance of risk and other issues that mitigate against large scale manufacturing of wind turbines in the US at the present time. Things may change.

GE Energy wind turbine orders top $1 billion

Atlanta Business Chronicle

GE Energy has inked a $730 million contract with wind project developer Energias de Portugal to provide 281 wind turbines for wind projects to be developed during 2008 and 2009 in Europe and the United States.

Atlanta-based GE Energy will send Neo Energia, the European renewable branch of Energias de Portugal, 80 2.5xl wind turbines for new wind projects in Europe. It also will give Horizon Wind Energy LLC, EDP's American branch, 201 1.5-megawatt wind turbines for projects in the United States.

"In the U.S. and around the world, we continue to see strong interest in the production of cleaner, wind-generated electricity," said Victor Abate, vice president of renewables for GE Energy. "In the U.S. alone, more than 2,400 megawatts of new wind power was installed in 2006 while worldwide, more than 15,000 megawatts were installed, according to the Global Wind Energy Council."

On Oct. 22, GE Energy reported a $350 million deal to provide wind turbines to Third Planet Windpower LLC.
