GM's Volt: Not Ready To "Electrify" Anybody Yet
"It still hasn't been built and it may not hit showrooms by the time people have been projecting. Yet, it's causing a puzzling amount of angst for investors and auto fans.

I'm talking about the Chevy Volt, an electrically driven car GM is developing. Yesterday, in an on-line chat, GM Chairman Rick Wagoner said the Volt may not be ready by 2010 as originally projected. The reaction on Wall Street puzzled me--GM stock sold off.

GM has never said it's a sure thing the Volt will roll into showrooms by 2010. Sure, they said that the goal is to be ready by then, but in every interview I've ever done or seen with GM execs have always said that their are numerous technological hurdles to overcome. Apparently nobody listened to those words of caution. "

I was just interviewed by CBS for a possible story on plug-in hybrids on Monday. You should tune in to CBS evening news Saturday for the first coverage of what I believe is a major advance in plug ins — a car I test drove a few weeks back and will be free to write about here Monday.

The idea behind the AFS Trinity is based on a widely accepted rule of thumb: the vast majority of drivers travel fewer than 40 miles a day. According to AFS Trinity, a driver who went 40 miles or less a day six days a week, and 100 miles once a week, would be traveling 150 miles for each gallon of gasoline burned, spending a little less than $8 for the gasoline and a little less than $8 for the electricity. The total fuel cost of $15.49 is about one-third of what it would cost for the gasoline to propel a conventional hybrid like the Lexus RX 400h the same distance, by AFS Trinity’s calculation.

2. But...but...GM said that technology won't be ready for 3 years
People are tired of waiting, and Detroit is being cut out of the loop.
