Like the corporate greenmail approach to EarthDay, the divert our attention from the necessary and effective policy changes that aren't being made at the macro level to how much toilet paper each person uses -- and then hides behind the cloak of "well both are important". Actually, one is HUGELY more important that the other, while the other is used systematically NOT to solve the problem but merely to spread blame around to more desirable targets.
The idea is for the elite to profit from policies of ecocide that they promote, while ordinary schlubs pay the price and take the blame. It's practically the "state religion" of the contemporary US.
