Cost of oil NOT imported due to ethanol less cost of $.51 tax credit to refiners: $6 Billion
http://www.geocities.com/jwalkerxy/imported_oil_savings.htm

Comparing the cost of the ethanol tax credit to Oil Refiners who blend the ethanol to the dollars saved in oil not imported is veryinteresting:

gallons of gasoline from a 42 gallon barrel of oil ................................................... 19.6

gallons of gasoline replaced by ethanol in 2007: ............................................... 6,485,000,000

barrels not imported (47% of the petroleum is used for gasoline): 0.47 .................... 155,507,653

dollars not spent on imported oil :....................
est avg cost/barrel 2007 .......................................................... $ 75.00........ $ 11,663,073,980
Mileage deficit (for ethanol)due to detuned engines 20%.................................................x .8
.....................................................................................................................9,330,400,000
cost of ethanol tax credit to oil refiners ($.51 per gallon blended): ............. $ 0.51 $ 3,307,350,000
Difference:....................................................................................................$6,023,050,000

You've got a net gain of over 6 billion dollars.

1. Net gain to consumer: $0
Opportunity cost in establishing manufacturing facilities for valid alternative energy technologies: ($3,307,350,000)

Additional profit to oil refiners: $3,307,350,000

Escalting price indicates higher demand than supply, actual avoided oil use: 0

Subsidy to refiners and grain producers: ?$3-5 billion??

7. Thanks for the info. You obviously have a much more intimate knowledge fo the oil distribution
business than I do. Are these fuel rack blenders ever owned by the large oil companies?

4. Don't you get fewer MPG from ethanol than gasoline? A 1-1 credit seems .... dishonest
I would love to see numbers on bio-diesel though

8. LOL. Such an articulate, reasoned response. Are the numbers wrong?
Edited on Sun May-04-08 01:52 PM by JohnWxy

is the number of gallons of ethanol produced wrong?

IS the credit amount wrong?

Do you take exception to the estimated price for a barrel of oil for 2007?

11. Just identify which data or calculations are wrong. Can you do that? It's pretty simple straight-

12. Right. Don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain....
Cherry picked data John. Why don't you atop trying to make ethanol into something it isn't. And for goodness sake please stop trying to turn this alcohol soaked pigs ear of an energy policy into something other than the rip off and sountr-productive boondoogle that it is

Money spent on ethonol PRODUCTION is WASTED right now. I stongly support more R&D because we are going to need biofuels as storage for many application. Personal transport isn't one of them however, and all the money spent on producing this crap now is WASTED.

For once why don't you address the criticisms instead of whining about people who make them.

10. Updated calculation to recognize that most ethanol is not blended at 85%:
Only a very small amount of the ethanol blended is blended at 85% ethanol, where the 20% adjustment for mileage loss due to present detuned engines which can't take advantage of the higher octane of ethanol would apply. MOst ethanol is blended in much smaller proportions - 6% to 10% to replace MTBE (varies depending upon the region you're in). At these proportions there is virtually no difference in mileage between strait gasoline and the gas with higher octane ethanol. So the mileage decrement is not appropriate.

This gives you a net gain from oil not imported of $8,273,609,280. Enough to pay for the tax credit to the rack blenders 2 and half times over.
