Israel holds the diplomatic cards, Middle East experts tell swissinfo why |
|
Arab anger inflamed by suffering in Gaza Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip against Hamas has provoked only a cautious international reaction; Middle East experts tell swissinfo why.
Fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian gunmen continued on Tuesday as Israel attempted to end militant rocket fire. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) meanwhile said the Gaza Strip faced "a full-blown humanitarian crisis".
The military offensive against Palestinian rocket squads launched by Israel on December 27 has left over 600 Palestinians dead and as many as 3,000 injured in Gaza. http://www.swissinfo.org/eng/front/Israel_holds_the_diplomatic_cards_experts_say.html?siteSect=105&sid=10164656&cKey=1231273971000&ty=st

The state sovereignty aspect, which many discussants seem to ignore, really does loom large in situations like this. I know that's no comfort to those in the line of fire, but when it comes to inter-state relations, I think it's a critical aspect that too many people ignore. Considering it may help resolve some peoples' confusion, if not their frustration, over what is happening.
