The players of Israeli basketball team Bnei Hasharon were shocked to see on Tuesday evening that they were not at all welcome in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara. They were received by some 3,000 Turkish fans with Palestinian flags and “Allahuakbar”s. An Israeli flag was burned in front of the arena.
This minor event came as a shock to the Israeli public as they realized that the recent harsh discourse employed by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reflected not only his personal sentiments, but also those of the majority of the Turkish nation. It came as a shock because it came from a country that is regarded as Israel’s only ally in the Muslim Middle East.
Tel Aviv was furious about Turkey’s bottom-to-top criticism of the military operation that is continuing in Gaza and Israel’s unwillingness to listen to Turkey’s -- and the world’s -- suggestions that it halt the operation immediately. “Is Tel Aviv losing Ankara?” is the first question that comes to mind.
