Sharon: Shaichat likely killed by Palestinians illegally in Israel
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon told U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice in Washington that Palestinians illegally in Israel were likely responsible for the murder of IDF soldier Corporal
Oleg Shaichat, Israel Radio reported.

A senior figure involved in the murder investigation said in
response to Sharon's statement that a number of possibilities
are being examined in the case. He said that the scenario
Sharon presented to Rice is no more certain than other
possibilities now being considered by investigators.

In talks with Rice on Monday on the killing of the soldier, Sharon also reemphasized the importance of the security fence.

1. IDF mishaps
Are often a rage here. No responses for a deliberate murder? Oh, my.

2. Hmm...

On Monday night, the IDF reissued its ban on
Israeli citizens entering
Palestinian-administered areas in the West
Bank. The renewed ban follows increased
warnings that Palestinian militants plan to
kidnap Israelis. The army has also recommended
that Israelis refrain from entering Area B
(areas under Israeli security authority and
Palestinian civilian administration) without
first coordinating with the IDF.

So is targeting Israeli civilians within the Occupied Territories terrorism or "legitimate resistance?" So long for the great cease fire.

3. I was checking out the Hebrew press
And I thought the consensus of those was that Israeli-Arabs kidnapped Oleg, not illegal Palestinians? Is this an update?

5. It being Israeli-Arabs ain't good either
There are sectors in Israeli society which see them as a "fifth column" etc. I saw a comment today on Maariv that only those who serve in the IDF "should be citizens of Israel". Pretty ominous.

Also, I think a lot of the media have underplayed this. This has been big in Israel for several days, and this murder will impact just as much as a suicide bombing (perhaps more).

I'm sure Gimel etc would agree with that.

6. internally, yeah..
but Sharon is still dealing with the Great White Father and having Israel's own police unable to deal with an Israeli citizen doesn't have quite the same punch as the notion that a Palestinian crossed the green line (probably with Arafat holding the barbed wire for him and a UN priest distracting the IDF standing nearby with their usual lies) and attacking his people.

7. Well...
if you don't allow them to serve in the IDF, and then say that if they don't they can't be citizens, isn't that blatant discrimination?
