Even before the latest scandal featuring Suha Arafat, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's wife, the "first lady of Palestine" had served as the butt of many jokes – most having to do with her voluptuousness or alleged promiscuity.
But her public refusal early Monday morning to permit PA leaders and likely Arafat political heirs Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and former prime minister Mahmoud Abbas to visit her dying husband catapulted her to the level of national pariah.
Dislike of Suha Arafat, said human rights activist Bassem Eid, "is something that most people can agree upon... For us she has become a neighborhood bully, she has lost her womanhood."
Her early morning histrionics on al-Jazeera, in which she made accusations of "conspiracies by traitors" against her and her husband, shocked most Palestinians, he said.
