Missouri House passes bill targeting those who help minors get abortions
Wednesday March 9 2005 6:59

They just got done with a bill to stop lawsuits. Guess it depends on who is doing the suing and what for.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - The House on Tuesday gave first-round approval to a bill that would authorize lawsuits against people who help a minor evade Missouri's parental consent laws by obtaining abortions in other states.

The bill also would increase regulations of abortion clinics and would require physicians to have clinical privileges at a hospital within 30 miles from where they perform abortions in Missouri.

The bill, approved by the House on a voice vote, needs another vote to advance to the senate.

First-round approval came as hundreds of anti-abortion activists crowded the Capitol to lobby lawmakers.

Sponsoring Rep. Jane Cunningham said the bill is intended to crackdown on adults who help minors obtain abortions in Illinois, which does not require parental consent. Missouri law requires anyone under age 18 to get consent from a parent, guardian or court before having an abortion.
