Better AG than Janet Reno??? |
|
I know this is kind of random, but I saw Janet Reno on Bill Maher's show a few weeks ago and it had me thinking. Is there really anyone out there -- at least in recent history -- who people would consider tp be a better Attorney General than her? Maybe it's just nostalgia, or maybe it's the fact that our current AG should be in handcuffs and standing before the ICC in the Hague, but I honestly can't think of a one.

I would nominate Robert F. Kennedy, Ramsey Clark and, maybe, Griffin Bell as better than Reno. I like Reno but give her a major downgrade for allowing the special prosecutor to investigate Clinton. May have been right on principle but was a political disaster.

I don't know how anybody can rate her high. After the Branch Dividian BBQ and Elian Gonzalez fiasco her name was mud with me.

4. I thought she handled the Elian thing very well |
|
That family in Miami was not going to give him up willingly, no matter how much they claimed they were. His dad's rights under american law, superceded theirs.
The INS also had to use force. Perhaps the family wasn't armed, but with all those crowds around the home all the time, who knew what could have happened otherwise.
The Branch-Davidian thing was a mess. I don't necessarily blame her, but at least she stood up and took responsibility for what happened.

10. eh. I agreed with her on principle but still thought she handled it badly |
|
She did nothing but talk for too long and then went in with way too much force. A raid on the home at like 3:00 in the morning on Easter? She should have had INS take him out earlier and, even if force was needed, it could have been done in a less dramatic way.

in that situation. Anybody who had to deal with all of that was brave I think. I saw her on Maher's show and he gave her big props for that and he made a good point. If he wasn't some cute little kid it would've gotten no attention.

Allowing the Ken Starr investigation was not good, but what was she supposed to do?
At the time, I remember watching Hillary on the Today Show telling Katie about the "Vast Right wing conspiracy..." against Big Dawg and thinking to myself "Nooooo! She didn't just say 'Conspiracy'!!
Did any of us really believe then--as we now know it to be true--the "right wing conspiracy" stuff?
Maybe Reno thought that it would be okay...principle would win in the end.

8. She was aweful. Why didn't she prosecute Harris? |
|
She did nothing for the disenfranchised in Florida. I wasn't sure whose side she was on.

She and she alone could have stopped Bush from taking office.
