Goal 2006: Rid the US Government of Rick Santorum
Early poll shows Santorum trailing by 5 points

By JOE CREA
Mar. 18, 2005

Gay rights advocates are salivating after a recent poll showed anti-
gay Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) trailing his unofficial opponent in
the 2006 election, moderate Democrat Bob Casey.

In the latest Quinnipiac poll released last month, Casey,
Pennsylvania's state treasurer, leads Santorum by five percentage
points.

2. Maybe it's too early to predict the outcome of the race --
-- but it would be just great to see Man-on-Dog Santorum whomped at the polls.

Would prefer a pro-choice Dem, but would take Casey if it meant losing Icky Ricky.

4. Good question.
I'm not sure. There've been some threads about him on DU before and I picked up a little from that, but not enough for your question.

Maybe some Pennsylvania DUers will come to the rescue here & fill us in.

10. As I understand it
as a Penn DUer...I remember reading in the Washington Post I think, that Bob Casey, Jr. is pro-life but does not make a habit out of talking about it, something along the lines of "he can go for months without talking about it." That's unlike his father, who angered Democrats by wanting to talk about being pro-life at the 92 & 96 conventions. On the one hand, I don't really see where a state treasurer would have a lot of opportunity to talk about abortion.

Here's a slightly related thing that I remember from the article...it mentioned that Penn has elected a lot of pro-choice Republicans (Tom Ridge, John Heinz, Arlen Specter, and another that I forget) but not many pro-life Democrats (aside from Bob Casey, Jr.). Interesting.

7. Tough race...
I believe Casey is pro-life, but relaxed about it.

Gonna be a tough one, but I think PA can rid Smug of his huginess.

The Penn Hills debacle is going to hurt him as long as we keep reminding everyone who will listen during this campaign.

This is a city that is hurting, six firehouses to close, and having tax dollars go to educate his six children when he or his family do not actually live in this two bedroom (he he wonder if they made room for Daddy) home in Penn Hills.

Money talks votes are lost.

8. Spreading Santorum
That and the fact that Santorum's name is now associated with Dan Savages web site http://www.spreadingsantorum.com
Dan needs to update it though.

9. I've heard that the DNC
is going to dump a lot of money into this race. Think of it... three of the furthest right wingers gone or severely damaged after 2006 with Santorum voted out, DeLay facing all sorts of legal issues and Frist retiring. Then the Zell Miller retirement bonus...

It's a good start.

11. Santorum, Pataki, Schwarzenegger - all should be high priorities.
Santorum is obviously the most repulsive of the three but they are all to a degree viable Presidential candidates from major blue states.

12. Don't forget Mitt Romney
It's important to get him voted out, as well.

George Allen vs. Mark Warner in Virginia, too. I have heard Allen's name thrown out there, and getting Warner elected could raise his profile as a potential VP candidate.

And Ahnold isn't a viable candidate, because he can't even get on the ballot.

15. Definitely.
Romney scares me. Could he win Massachusetts? George Allen also, though I don't think we should put Warner up against him because Warner would have a better chance at the White House and would have a difficult time unseating Allen.

Schwarzenegger - how could I forget. The people you named definitely should be higher priorities than him. Though I wouldn't put it past the GOP to pass an amendment at some point.

16. Romney
Romney scares me. Could he win Massachusetts?

A recent Boston Globe poll had 50% of voters saying Romney shouldn't run for reelection for governor OR for president. He's not terribly popular here, and his traveling around the country mocking the state isn't helping.

I don't think he's going to run for gov again here. A loss would ruin his presidential candidacy.
