We have seen it with Republcians who supported Kerry and the stem cells debate because they had family members who could benefit from this, and now this letter from the San Diego Union Tribune:

The case of Terri Schiavo
I am a Republican and a member of the so-called "right-wing extremist evangelical Christians." Yet I greatly am opposed to what is being done to Michael Schiavo.
In September 2003 I had to make that tough decision, much like the husband in Florida has made. This is a very tough decision to make. It is also not aided much by medical science or a doctor's opinion. You are very much left to decide this based on what you have been told is fact and know is true. Even so, in the end it is a "gut feeling" for what is right for her, what she would want. That said, no one can make that decision better than a husband or wife for their spouse.
I made my decision based on my own understanding of my wife's prognosis, what the doctors told me, and a deeply spiritual understanding of my duty to my wife regardless of what I wanted. No decision I have ever made compares to that one. No one can know the depth of Michael Schiavo's grief, not even one who has gone through the same thing, because no one was married to Terry Schiavo but Michael Schiavo.
The law says the husband makes this decision, so let the husband do what he must. Do not tread on my duty and right as a husband to honor my wife in her final hours.
