Poll question: Will John McCain run for President in 2008?
Will John McCain run for President in 2008? And if so, what can we do to stop him?

1. yes-- has been trying to position himself as the extension of the Bush
administration since the 2004 election-- which I honestly think he didn't want Bush to win.

9. I think you are quite right it would have made it easier to position
himself for 2008. Much I like I kinda think that Hillary in the back of her mind breathed a sigh of relief when Kerry gave in. His victory would have put her cahnces for the presidency back by 8 years,

2. If he does run
the democratic candidate needs to hire george bush and karl rove to trash McCain. They have a lot of experience with that and those two do not have a soul or a heart so helping a democrat wouldn't be problem if the price were right.

40. I would hope no Democrat would hire Karl Rove
Edited on Mon Mar-28-05 05:27 PM by karynnj
Kerry fought a clean fight against GWB who by many accounts he hates and refused to follow Clinton's advice on the gay marriage issue. He obviously has a conscience. He is, or at least was, friendly with McCain and respected him, I honestly could not picture him using Karl Rove to fight him (even if Karl was available). That said, if McCain looks like he's the candidate, I would imagine that Kerry's and other Democrats' comments about him will become less positive.

On a more general level, what works for the Republicans may not work for the Democrats.

If there were ever a Republican I would vote for, it'd be McCain. I imagine he would cream anyone we could come up with. He is one of the most respected politicians in the country, outside of DU.

i used to have respect for him before he sucked up so much to Bushit and company. He didn't defend his own family when the neo-cons (Bush and friends) lied about his child and wife and SC which cost him the nomination. Then he campaigned for the shrub and NOW he is out trying to help Bushit wreck social security.

46. Despite your personal feelings about him,
he and Colin Powell are among the most respected politicians in the country. McCain would have no trouble winning the general election. I don't like the fact that he is friendly with Bush, but he is also far less partisan and political then most Republicans; what other prominent Republican even came close to praising Kerry?

14. He will run, but...
There's no need to stop him. The GOP doesn't want McCain in the White House. They've used him as a so-called moderate to win over the middle, but once he comes to call in favors, they'll hang him out to dry. In any case, the GOP isn't going to upset their razor-thin lead in the Senate by having someone leave it to run for POTUS.

Look for the GOP 2008 candidate to either be from the House or a governor.

...not such an easy task given the extremists over there.

However, if he doe win their primary, our task will indeed be difficult. Hillary has no chance...although I think her chances against any GOPer are slim. Our candidate will have to be someone who has enough differences in ideology from the right to be perceived as a populist. Let's just hope he doesn't run.

I supported him in 2000, even though I voted for BC. I actually believed him when he said he was speaking "Straight Talk"!

I believed in John, until the last few months. He's stopped the straight talk, and has reverted to bs politics just like the rest of them. Sorry John, but you've lost me forever!

35. If he can secure the nomination he'll win an electoral rout
I can't think of a single Democratic candidate or potential candidate that could beat McCain in the general election.

His only challenge is securing the nomination, something that will be much harder.

From the past year or so, it seems his strategy for doing this has been sticking his nose up Bush's ass as far as it will go. From campaigning for Bush's reelection to following him around the country stumping for his SS ponzi scheme, McCain wants the right to think Bush sees him as a worthy successor.

McCain is probably the most widely respected politician in the country, and if he gets the GOP nomination he will be the 44th president.

39. I think that with all the scutiny that a candidate gets,
McCain will be seen to be less a maverick and less clean than people think now. He also seems to be very volatile. I would imagine that eitehr Kerry or Hillary would appear both more knowledgeble and more stable than McCain in debates. (Yes, I do remember 2004 - but McCain isn't President.) My guess is that Kerry would also know just the buttons to push, while sounding reasonable himself.

Anyone who reads the description of the POW/MIA committtee in McCain's book should come away with the impression that Kerry has the temperment to be President, where McCain doesn't.

Yes
But he'll get crushed in the GOP primaries, just like in 2000. Remember how all the red-state "evangelicals" turned out in droves to vote for the dimwit after McCain won New Hampshire and seemed to be on his way to the nomination? The same thing will happen in 2008, which is a shame for McCain (but good for us) because he would be a very formidable general election candidate. He would have easily disposed of Gore, and I think Hillary is probably the only one we've got who could beat him.

42. How does Hillary get to 270 against McCain?
I don't see a red state that she can flip, or that McCain would lose.

I could however, see McCain flipping a Wisconsin, Minnesota, or a Pennsylvania against Hillary.

As I said in my other post, McCain scares me, and I don't see how he can be stopped if he gets the nomination.

and I really have no problem with that.

With the dem "leaders" like Soros and Spielberg failing to put their cash where their mouths are (communications, cablenews, radio stations), we dont have a chance in hell in 2008. The corporate media will be even worse because dems relaly aren't doing anything about it.

MCain is decent on the environment and makes some common sense decisions. He would be 100x better than Bush.

54. A more interesting question is
If McCain doesn't get the backing of the Republican party, will he bolt & run as an Indie?

2008, because of his age, is his last chance. He has played the good, loyal trooper to his party. If they don't back him will he go off the reservation?

And, if he ran as an Indie, could he win?
