"Star Wars," the "missile defense" program that Reagan began and was picked up by BushCo, is just another piece of thievery in the Halliburton/Enron mold.
Reagan may or may not have understood that. (Who the hell knows when the Alzheimer's began.) But BushCo sure knows it.
The defense-industry profits whether their systems work or not. And as we've seen for the past two decades, a fly swatter would be more effective than anything they've come up with.
Whether or not we really need such a system may (to some small degree) be debatable. But the fact is that "need" has nothing to do with it. All it is, is just one more program to pay off mega-business Republican donors, while giving us nothing in return. And it provides one more reason to cut programs that help actual human beings.

at the University of Maine, my nuclear physics prof had a poster on the wall of his lab that said "Support Star Wars. Research physicists need Porsches too."

2. At least they earn a Porshe. All that (most) CEO's earn is our disgust. |
