There is no such thing as a "Christian Democracy" |
|
Why is something seemingly so obvious so hard for some to grasp? "Christian Democracy" is a contradiction of terms. Christianity is a religious dictatorship, if you will, with its tenets dictated by Jesus Christ. A democracy is basically a governmental structure where laws are passed reflecting the wishes of the people, who may happen to be Christian, but who are also atheists, Buddhists, Muslim, you name it. The point is....our Constitution does not allow for any of these faiths, beliefs, etc. to be recognized and endorsed to the exclusion to the others. I know I'm preaching to the choir (sorry for the metaphor), but it's frustrating. One thing that has worried me is a couple of years ago I heard a conservative make the comment: "The word 'democracy' is nowhere in the Constitution." Does a statement like that bother anyone else? By the way, I consider myself a Christian....not a good one...but a Christian. It's appalling to me the things being done today in the name of Christianity.

2. So what you're saying is that |
|
"A democracy is basically a governmental structure where laws are passed reflecting the wishes of the people, who may happen to be Christian, but who are also atheists, Buddhists, Muslim, you name it" is a giant non sequitur.
Because obviously if the majority are Xian and decide to pass laws in keeping with their beliefs, it can't be a democracy. After all, that would be majority rule.
Or what you're saying is that it doesn't matter what the majority is, the minority (if it is a minority) that's atheist must have their views respected. So the only real democracy is the tyranny of a minority. No, wait, that means tyranny is democracy.
However, one can respect minorities without oppressing them; this is distinct from offending them or not catering to them. Societies are usually constructed to provide the most convenience to the majority; this does not mean that a religion is crammed down everybody else's throat. When you have 20 people all with mutually exclusive claims on the public space, the majority tends to win, or everybody should lose to the same extent. But that can't happen.
(I say this as a Xian who has never had one bit of government support for any of my beliefs.)

3. can you give any support to your statement that... |
|
Societies are usually constructed to provide the most convenience to the majority?
From my observation societies are usually constructed to provide the most convenience to the powerful elite, the plebes be damned.

5. There would be no democracy |

as we know it without Christianity as we know it That is why Nietzsche hated Paul; because Paul dared suggest equality in the eyes of God. Equality is essential to Democracy. Equality is essential to the notion of rights. Liberty is the result of rights and equality, and liberty become license, and rights become privilege are the end of equality. What makes Christianity dangerous to all democracy is the Idea of Authority given by God. That is a privilege no free society can endure. The thing that make Christianity doubly dangerous for democracy is the fact that Christianity has for the most part returned to Judaism, and the Old Testament beliefs. For lack of a better word in my vocabulary I call it 'tangible justification'. This is the certainty that we are blessed when we have wealth, health, and education or authority. This is not what Jesus was saying. He was saying we are all blessed, some sooner, and some later; with those blessed sooner obligated with the care of their neighbors. Organized Christianity is incompatible with Democracy, but then, it is also incompatible with Christianity per se. It is not incompatible with Judaism, or with monarchy, feudalism, terrorism or capitalism.
