As a psychologist, I think that what has been taking place, to use a psychoanalytic term, is: projection.
In other words, when the Repugs have accused Dem Kerry of flip-flopping, indeed, the matter is exactly what they do: "me thinks the lady doth protest too much"
"The contradictory views of Republican conservatives are endless. In addition to wanting juries to decide issues when that would help Repubs, but not to decide issues which would hurt Repubs, we have:
(1) People with no financial investing experience should be able to handle private Social Security accounts, but can't be trusted to decide who to have sex with;
(2) They love and support our military, but the Veterans' Administration is simply a drag on our economy;
(3) Spending billions of $$ on infrastructure in Afghanistan and Iraq is the necessary cost of building "democracy," but spending the same money here is less important than giving multiple tax breaks to wealthy Americans;
(4) It's important and legitimate to severely restrict public access to the president's Social Security shows, but access to the White House press room is okay for a gay prostitute;
(5) It's extremely important that the three major factions in Iraq learn to work together cooperatively in order to build democratic structures, but it's okay for us to send the most extreme bomb-thrower we can find to be our representative in the U.N.
(6) It's okay for Dick Cheney, Tom Delay, Sean Hannity and the other frothing Repubs to resort to threats, insults, and indignation at the drop of a hat, but liberals and progressives who do anything similar are demonstrating their lack of control and maturity.
I could go on for a very long time, but I'd get carpal tunnel syndrome."
