38 Republican senators vote against armor for Humvees

The Senate voted 61-39 to approve an amendment to add $213 million for more armor for Humvees in Iraq.

What possible justification do the 39 (38 Republicans, 1 Democrat) have for voting no?

1. Anyone who lives in a state represented by those 39
needs to start writing LTTE a.s.a.p!

I hope the a family member of one of our fallen soldiers writes one. I hope they write many.

8. Before You Make Any Decisions
You better read the bill that the amendment was attached to.
Look up HR 1268, which also involves establishing regulations for State driver's licenses and Identification cards.

Big brother is getting bigger!!!!!

13. I just entered HR 1268 and got words about toxic mold...did they really
combine toxic mold with something about Homeland Security licenses and id cards with armour for Humvees? It's time to protest the dirty dealing. I don't get it. This is a filthy way to operate.

And I don't have time to learn tonight.

Someone, please save us.

We don't have leaders in Washingtonm, we have TRAITORS.

31. They pull this shit all the time
They always tack on amendments that have nothing to with the bill. They often sneak it in. It blows and I think it is a very retarded practice but Senator Byrd (D-WV) is famous for using this practice to funnel money into his state. "Pork-barrel" is where they use this to help their state or special interest.

The actual Senators don't read each and every part of everything they vote on. Sometimes their staff doesn't either. That's congress for you. It's fucked up.

...is not a priority with 39 republicans. They need to stand up and be counted, then asked why $213 million for protection was voted down by them.

Every single "no" vote is safe. We could use it against them, sure, but none of them are going to lose. The only "no" vote that isn't going to be back in 2007 is Bill Frist, and that's only because he's retiring.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR01268:@@@L&summ2=m&

includes:

(Sec. 1111) Increases the: (1) maximum benefit under the Servicemen's Group Life Insurance program from $250,000 to $400,000 (or lesser amounts as a member may elect); and (2) military death gratuity from $12,000 to $100,000. Provides a special death gratuity of up to $150,000 with respect to service designated by the Secretary as a combat operation or a zone of combat. Terminates such increases at the end of FY 2005. Provides an additional death gratuity of $238,000 for deaths that occur before the enactment of this Act in combat operations, in a combat zone, or in Operations Enduring Freedom or Iraqi Freedom.

Makes emergency supplemental appropriations for: (1) international disaster and famine assistance; (2) transition initiatives for Sudan; (3) the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID); (4) the Economic Support Fund; (5) assistance for the independent states of the former Soviet Union; (6) international narcotics control and law enforcement; (7) migration and refugee assistance; (8) nonproliferation, anti-terrorism, demining and related programs; (9) economic support requirements of the Global War on Terror; (10) the Foreign Military Financing Program; and (11) peacekeeping operations.

And the one I find most interesting (being in Mississippi), particuarly since Lott voted against it:

(Sec. 6033) Directs the Secretary of the Interior to allow the State of Mississippi to take certain actions with respect to the exploration, development, and production of oil drilling on sites outside the boundaries of Gulf Islands National Seashore which result in the drill hole crossing into land under the Seashore.

Haley Barbour has really been pushing for this.

So not only were they voting against the armor, they were voting against death benefits increase, and tsunami and Sudan relief.

32. Yes, that's the question: why did they vote nay? Was there something else
in the bill that they were refusing to support? These bills rarely are for one thing only. Was it really $213 million ONLY for more Humvee armor? That's a LOT of money.

I would like to know more about this. OF COURSE more armor should have been in place long ago. But I want to know WHY these people voted as they did. They would know this was an unpopular vote, so it's puzzling that they would do this.

but then, i'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. just start getting some photos of humvees blown to bits with blood and gore all over, place a picture of an injured/amputee US soldier, and then place a picture of one of the 38 GOP members all shadowed and criminal-like (a la Time magazine pic of OJ Simpson) and caption it "Any Questions?" mass mail in the appropriate zones and voila' the power of truth and exposure.

Those bills are ridiculous because they get so far removed from what the orignial bill was for. I'll never forget when Bob Dole tacked on a raise for Congress to a bill voting for black lung benifits for coal miners.

Gee...whata you know it passed and Congress got its raise. Its total BS what these bills start out as and then become.
