Much different results---WaPo shows an even split basically about Bush's handling of NOLA, between the parties.........


Survey USA Polls On Katrina

Some pretty clear trends are emerging in public opinion:
59% of Americans today say the Federal government is not doing enough to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA nationwide poll of 1,200 adults conducted Thursday 9/1. This is up 9 points, from 50%, in the past 24 hours.(...)

75% of Americans today say that local officials are unprepared to meet the challenge that is before them. That is up 14 points, from 61%, in the past 24 hours.(...)

34% of Americans today say the government's response to the hurricane has been surprisingly disorganized, up 14 points in 24 hours.(...)

31% of Americans now say the city of New Orleans should not be rebuilt, up 7 points in the past 24 hours.
I don't know what is going on with 31% of the country saying to not rebuild New Orleans. Are there pundits out there trying to push this idea?

Overall, people are clearly growing more and more upset with the government's response to Katrina. It is, to wax Lakoffian, an ineffective response. I worry, however, if progressives beginning to argue for more effective government in crisis situations such as these will be able to get anywhere. Sometimes, I seriously wonder if the government being unable to respond effectively to situations like this is part of the entire point of conservative government. The more times they drop the ball, the more people come to believe that we simply should never expect anything positive from the public sector.
