Poll question: How important are Civil Rights & Voting Rights Acts to our democracy? |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-13-05 10:41 AM by Humor_In_Cuneiform
The Voting Rights act is up for renewal.
Some of the provisions prohibit practices that are meant to result in discrimination.
Other provisions prohibit practices that have a discrimanatory impact, regardless of intent.
Given the irregularities we saw last November, I believe the latter is extremely important, since intent is sometimes harder to prove than impact.
Both the intention to discriminate and any practices that in fact result in discrimination should be prohibited.
Aside from all that, non-discrimination is just plain right IMHO. And affirming that should be important to us as Democrats, Independents, Liberals, Progressives etc.

People died for us to have it. That makes it very important in my book!

is where our democracy is falling. These appointments are the beginning of the end (and so was the Rhenquist court).
