My mom thinks Bush isn't doing ENOUGH damage in Iraq! |
|
So this was interesting. I was talking to my mom today about Bush. After having voted for him in 2004, she's starting to sour on him a bit, but not for the reasons you think.
First, she thinks that all "easterners" should leave the country. Hence, the US needs to close off its borders to "these people" and Bush HASN'T discussed this issue.
Second, Bush hasn't done enough damage in Iraq. He hasn't flattened the place and left it because of the "evil religion" that's over there.
Therefore, she is souring on Bush because he's "wishy-washy" and isn't standing tough ENOUGH.
Now... how exactly do I characterize something like this? :wow:

I'd file her in the hopeless ignorant section. Seriously that's a battle not worth fighting at this point.

My mom suffers from NPD. As far as she's concerned, Arabs are mere objects that can be cleared away when they become inconvenient. :(
I grew up with her and dealt with her disorder in a very real way. And yet her inability to feel as exemplified by comments like the above always amaze me.
She and Bush are cut from the same cloth.

4. Well you can start by telling her that Iraq was a secular country |
|
until Bush invaded them.
At least your Mom has a reason for supporting Bush (even though it's complete BS), my parents like him just because he's not a "Liberal". They've never given me one real reason why they like him.

6. "Easterners" is that just the north east or the entire eastern seaboard? |
|
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 05:16 PM by MissMarple
Just tell her we should nuke'm all, it's the Christian thing to do.
Kidding aside, I'm sorry about your mom, Writer. Some people just seem to have a down deep need to believe this stuff. A lot of older people are still like that about the Japanese because of their Pearl Harbor memories.
edit: oops!

9. You know that 30-40% or so that still support Bush? |
|
I have been pondering this theory that they have the same disorder as Bush, and therefore, somewhat like and agree with his narcissism. You know, self-affirming themselves through this "moral" "Christian" leader.
Bah... or maybe they're just lemmings... who knows?

7. People need to start "divorcing" their RW families |
|
Obviously this is not an option for everyone, and many people love their RW relatives in spite of their sickness, but if my family held such beliefs (and they do!), I could no longer associate with them (and I don't!), no more than if they were supporting Nazis during WWII.
But again, I understand this is not possible for some. It's just where I stand.

She drove Volvo's and now drives a large SUV because, in her words, she'd "rather drive a Sherman tank."
Maybe she'd fit right in.

She also seems to be lacking something called compassion. She sounds like a sociopath for the observation that she apparently doesn't feel for other human beings.

afraid of those who are different from her and afraid of a faith that she doesn't understand. It is sad, too, because if she actually TALKED with people who are different she might be surprised to find out that they are people too-some jerks, some angels, but most just ordinary folks.

14. It does seem like she fears being surrounded, doesn't she? |
|
The role of the "other" impacts her strongly. She must alienate and ostracize the "other" so she can keep her life simpler and easier to negotiate.

17. The essential contradiction of the Iraq policy |
|
The Iraq occupation is bound to fail because the Bush supporters can't get the story straight on whether we are in Iraq to save Iraqis or kill them.
We call for a pullout, and it's no, that would be bad for Iraq. The US tortures and kill Iraqi civilians, and it's pretty much what they have coming to them.

24. Well... in that Catholic obligatory sense, I suppose. |
|
I don't think she attends mass anymore. And they don't actually teach us about the Bible in Catholic church...
but either way I think the words of Jesus would actually inspire my mom to believe even MOREthat Arab Muslims are infidels that don't deserve to live... we're dealing with some rather twisted logic here.
... funny, but that's exactly the same logic to which she accuses Muslims...

When they start in with the usual talking points then it would take a hell of a lot for her to change.
I like how them ole' "easterners" should get the hell out of Murika but us "westerners" are OK to be in Iraq. That bat shit crazy, hypocrisy type of RW thinking is a brain washing. The more hate radio or hate TV she watches the worse it will become.
Have fun....

30. That's because he is busy destroying New York |
|
In what is an embarrassment for Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg of New York the people that want to build the ‘Freedom Museum’ at Ground Zero are a mixed bag of questionable characters. The families of the victims of 9/11 generally agree that the design and presentation of the ‘Freedom Museum’ does not represent their view. Natan Sharansky, is a former dissident and political prisoner in the Soviet Union and a former government minister in Israel and so he may be attempting to overcome his own hatred. Sara J. Bloomfield is director of the Holocaust Memorial Museum who again brings to the table issues surrounding the Jewish experience in Israel rather than the experience of stockbrokers minding their own business on a bright, sunny September day in New York. Anne-Marie Slaughter, dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and Richard Norton Smith, the former director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and present director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum are also on the board. Topping the cake is Fareed Zakaria. He is the Indian-born Muslim editor of Newsweek and wrote “The Future of Freedom” which warns against spreading democracy. This particular ‘Freedom Museum’ does not belong in New York or anywhere in the United States. Let them build one in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and one in Tel Aviv, Israel. Pataki and Bloomberg seem like men that would allow these fanatics the opportunity to enshrine the murder of thousands of Americans.

31. I just looked up one of your examples out of curiosity |
|
and you took the one that I looked up totally out of context. While Fareed Zakaria does write about "the dangers of democracy" what he apparently argues is that giving countries like Iraq "too much democracy at once" empowers the mullahs and will lead to the country being overrun by religious fundies. Sounds pretty accurate, though sad, to me. Of course it assumes that we have the right to decide for them ...
