Miers Will be Confirmed With 90+ Votes in the Senate
Only token opposition from the likes of Kennedy, Kerry, Durbin, et al. Who knows if even Boxer will object, I could almost guarantee DiFi will vote for her.

Talk of filibuster is insanely unrealistic and will not happen.

She is a stealth nominee and may get piecemeal criticism for being a Bush "crony" but that's about all anybody will find on her, and it won't make a difference in the end.

See my July thread entitled: Roberts Will be Confirmed With 70+ Votes. Disagree?

1. Unless something really bad comes out about her, yes.
Just the lack of judicial experience means nothing. Many have been appointed w/o being judges before.

2. Chair of the Texas Lottery Commission during the period
when that G-Tech kickback scandal happened?

I hope not. The dirt is far too obvious here.

Plus, doubleplus underqualified.

3. She'll get 68-70 votes
I think there'll be more opposition then you think -- on both sides.

4. I hope so, otherwise The United States Senate will prove itself
to be as big a joke as The United States Supreme Court.

5. I doubt it
At first glance Miers seems much less controversial than Roberts, and Roberts wasn't very controversial.

6. How can she miss getting confirmed?
After all, the White House withheld substantial portions of Roberts' record, Roberts refused to answer practically any question put to him, and he sailed through to confirmation as Chief Justice. Every scrap of legal writing by Miers will be withheld on some bogus claim of "privilege," whether executive or attorney/client, she won't answer anything, and nobody on the Democratic side of the aisle will say "boo."

Well, they might comment that she's a snappy dresser or has nice children, but she'll be confirmed by Columbus Day and be ruling against 90% of the citizenry come the new year.

7. MIERS
Miers will likely lose a number of right wing votes. My guess is she will win a narrow confirmation as the left and right both vote no.

On another topic based on what I read on the right-wing web sites, Bush approval rating likely to plunge lower as his base abandons him over this pick.

Despite all this, my belief is dems should be prepared to fight this nomination.

10. You're absolutely right.
And I hear she was on Reid's "acceptable" list too. I don't see us having a leg to stand on with her unless something comes out.

12. She's never been a judge before and there may be Republican objections
Barring any republican issues with her or any creepy-crawlies in her closet, she will likely be confirmed. Of course it's always an easy bet to offer - I don't think you're taking much of a risk predicting something like this - nominees are RARELY rejected - it's a big deal when they are.

13. Spock, you're looking like that
great American President of the 20th century - William Jefferson Clinton.

Where are your pointy ears?

Your logic is of course Vulcan and therefore solid.

14. No serious person can doubt she will be confirmed
And I'm not trying to be bold in that prediction.

She will probably be less controversial than Roberts.

Most of the Dem women will vote her.

And I bet over all she gets at least 34 Democratic votes, bringing her to 90.

They won't lose any GOPpers, whose the most extreme out that Senate bunch, Tom Coburn? I can see him whining, but not voting against.

No way she gets less than Roberts, that's basically what I'm saying, at least 90.

15. the last nominee
with this little amount of public record was Souter. That turned out pretty well. You just never know with a nomination like this one.

16. What concerns me is the closeness with Bush
She called him the most brilliant man she ever met.

Hoping for a Souter is probably too much, but a Kennedy/O'Connor probably isn't out of the question.

18. The word you are looking for is CRONY
It was cronyism that put idiots like Brown at FEMA, Chertoff at Homeland Security, and Bolton at the UN.

Bush migh as well name his dog Barney to head the FAA.

They filibuster or I no longer will get involved; I will work in the US a few more years and then emigrate to another country. Permanently.
