Today's Chuckle: Freepers debate "how to tell a patrician from a non"
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1493884/posts?q=1&&page=251

The topic came up when one astute Freeper noted that John Roberts' wife looked like a "patrician". Note the dearth of "Negroes" (Freeper reference) on the patrician list.

How do you tell a patrician looking person from a nonpatrician looking one?

This might help, as visuals often do more than words. So imagine a picture of these people compared with one another where two names are listed in apposition (not that I am talking up all those in the Patrician list as role models for Americans), or consider individuals singly when no one is opposite.

Patrician......................Nonpatrician
Jane Roberts................Hillary Clinton
Jacqueline Kennedy..........Sheila Jackson Lee
Billy Graham................Jesse Jackson
George Washington............Huey Long
................................Aristotle Onassis
................................Bill Gates
Laura Bush...................That ketchup Heiress
...........................

It denotes an air of self-confidence rather than pride; it can involve being descended from families that have been successful in their personal and professional lives, but not always; to wit: Frederick Douglass, the slave who bought his freedom and educated himself, becoming a firebrand for Negro liberty and rights during and following the Civil War.

8. stop insulting monarchists
it isn't about monarchy.

A constitutional monarchy is a hell of a lot better than what these fascists want.

7. "patrician"=elitist Republican (and occasionally a Dem like Jackie O.,
as long as she dresses well and doesn't get too political).

9. Wow, like everybody else here, I have no idea who that "ketchup"
heiress is . . . I can't think of one single brand of ketchup - I guess that that family was never successful . . .

Now, Laura Bush - there's a successful family! Look at all the great work her husband did for all those companies . . . and what about her family? Um, didn't they found that grape juice company?

11. Patricians had a purple stripe on their toga...
The word is slightly obsolete.

Laura Bush? Her family was upper-middle-class in Midland...

And Billy Graham would probably NOT call himself patrician.

Why is there no "Patrician" equivalent for Bill Gates? Because that class was above "work."
