CNN reports 70 'suspected' insurgents killed near Ramadi
BBC however reports a slightly less feel good version:
"The US military says it has killed 70 insurgents in west Iraq, although witnesses say most were civilians."

I can only imagine what is really happening there. My news organizations seem content only to read the DOD press releases.

2. Insurgents
If Iraqis were driving tanks up and down my road and bombing my neighborhood, then I would be an "insurgent". Bushco makes it seem like a dirty word but in Iraq they are patriots.

Dozens of Iraqis die in US air strikes

Monday 17 October 2005, 14:40 Makka Time, 11:40 GMT

A US army statement says there were no civilian casualties

US warplanes and helicopters have bombed two villages near the city of Ramadi where witnesses say at least 39 civilians were killed while the US army says the air strike killed an estimated 70 fighters.

On Sunday, a group of about two dozen Iraqis gathered around the wreckage of a US vehicle destroyed the previous day by a roadside bomb. The people were hit by the US air strikes by, the military and witnesses said.

The air strike hit the crowd, which had gathered around to look at the wreckage of the vehicle and to pick pieces off it - as often occurs after an American vehicle is hit. The vehicle was destroyed on election day.

Chiad Saad, a tribal leader, and several witnesses who refused to give their names to protect their security, said 25 civilians were killed in the attack.

4. How easy it is to just bomb a village, kill scores of civilians,
and then conveniently label them "insurgents."

9. BBC World Service this am reported a group of 20 were killed
near a place where a bomb had gone off yesterday. Speculation is they were not insurgents, just a group of people looking over the scene.
