Because we are still, even after all the battering and bruising the Republicans have given us, the country that offers hope and justice and freedom.
America offers a chance to lift people's lives in one generation: a meritocracy of talent and good will and dreams.
America offers a vision (not yet reached) of a society that is inclusive and rewarding and incentive of hard work, thrift, careful planning and joyous fulfillment.
The far right, theocratic wing of the Republican party is NOT AMERICA, nor should we ever let them define the country we love. They are about control, fear, distrust and pessimism.
They are, in effect, the polar opposites of the Founding Fathers. Their message is not the great design in liberty our forefathers created for us.
I love America because it is still the grand experiment in freedom. The gains we have made in justice and freedom over the last 230 years have, by and large, not been set back: we freed the slaves; we traveled the hard road with women from being treated as chattel to full, equal participation in a democratic republic; we ended deplorable Jim Crow, separate but equal laws; we have begun the process of extending the American dream to gays and lesbians and their nuclear families.
None of this has been achieved without a constant war of vigilance. Those who seek to move America backwards are omnipresent and loud and motivated.
But for each three steps forward we have taken, they have only so far succeeded in moving us one step back.
I love America, because each generation moves us closer towards the goals implicit in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
I love America, because she gives us hope.
