I think Alito is one huge distraction and
shows the ever-present poor leadership. Dimson should be trying to get his constituents to agree on something; this tears the country a bit more and will surely result in a fight.
Can't this guy do anything right?

2. A distraction?????
How about a fucking disaster? This guy is to the right of Scalia. He will be confirmed. Using the nuclear option will solidfy those on the right. Bush is once again going to be a hero to them.

5. If they destroy filibuster, they will regret it after 2006 and 2008.

6. With current polling suggesting that they are vulnerable in 2006,
would the pukes still risk invoking the nuclear option at this point? Sure, it sounded good coming off *'s "mandate"; we're at a different place now. Aren't current political considerations something which might diminish their willingness to strip the minority party of any vestige of power since they now face the possibility of becoming members of that powerless party?

12. Of course they would, BECAUSE they are vulnerable.
Invoking the 'nuclear option' will strengthen the republicans , not harm them. Bushes numbers are down because right wingers are abandoning him for being too 'liberal' and for what they see as giving in to the 'left'. Invoking the 'nuclear option' will help to negate the vulnerabilities, at least as far as 2006 elections are concerned. It will energize and unify their base.

13. How Do You Figure?
Polling data suggests that the electorate is 34% conservative, 21% liberal and 45% moderate...

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/US/P/00/epolls.0.html

So how does a move that potentially alienates two thirds of the nation improve his electoral fortunes...

Our challenge as Democrats is to reduce the Republicans to their ultra right wing base....

If we can't do that we are useless as a party....

15. Moderates
tend to support the idea that the president should be allowed to chose his own nominees. They also tend to see the filibuster as a tactic of obstructionists.

9. The Right-Wing Republicans WILL AGREE
with this decision. You and I are not the constituents that W is trying to please. There is no longer even a pretense of doing what might be right for the country in the White House. They play only to what appeases the right-wing Christ-O-Crats that got them there.

10. The right wing only cars about abortion.
The other right wing only cars about giving more to the billionaires.

The MODERATES hold the key if they only would take up the battle they could SAVE us from both.

14. I agree - Bush went controversial so we talk about it instead...
of pack of criminals * harbors in the WH. The Democrats in Washington need to make a lot of noise about this guy, particularly the points brought up by thinkprogress (like Alito would strike down the Family Medical Leave Act).
