Oliver Stone Anti-War Ad to Air

(CNSNews.com) - Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone will Thursday launch a new television ad critical of the U.S. military mission in Iraq. Sponsored by MoveOn.org Political Action and VoteVets.org, the ad is timed to coincide with President Bush's expected veto of legislation that ties military funding to a timeline for a withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. The ad, which will air on CNN nationwide Thursday, features a former U.S. Army sergeant who says he is "very disappointed in the civilian leadership and administration for sending us needlessly into combat," MoveOn said in a release Tuesday. The March 2003 invasion toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussen.

Oliver Stone served in Vietnam 4/67 to 11/68. Wounded twice and rec'd the Bronze Star with "V" device for valor for "extraordinary acts of courage under fire", and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.


A veteran of the Vietnam war, Stone served with the United States Army from April 1967 to November 1968. He specifically requested combat duty and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division and the 1st Cavalry Division, and was wounded twice in action. His personal awards include the Bronze Star with "V" device for valor for "extraordinary acts of courage under fire", and the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster.

He has made three films about Vietnam —Platoon (1986), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), and Heaven & Earth (1993). He has called these films a trilogy, though they each deal with different aspects of the war. Platoon is a semi-autobiographical film about Stone's experience in combat. Born on the Fourth of July is based on the autobiography of Ron Kovic. Heaven & Earth is a true story of Phung Le Ly Hayslip, a Vietnamese girl whose life is drastically affected by the war

Oliver Stone Joins MoveOn for TV Project Critical of Iraq War

(CNSNews.com) - Oscar Award-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone and the liberal political group MoveOn.org are joining forces to produce a 30-second television spot that will comprise a video interview of a U.S. soldier or family member "urging for a responsible redeployment of troops in Iraq."

"We have leaders in Washington who say they're 'supporting our troops' - but the people who suffer most from their policies are the troops themselves," said Stone, a Vietnam veteran who received Academy Awards for directing the movies "Platoon" in 1986 and "Born on the Fourth of July" in 1989.

"I decided to participate in this project because, as a veteran, I know that America needs to listen to our servicemen and women," Stone said in a statement Thursday. "They've been there, and they know what's really going on. They need to be part of this debate."
