Barack Obama's wife crowd favorite in campaign appearance with husband
http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/newssentinel/17289288.htm

CONWAY, N.H. - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama handed his jacket to wife Michelle at one point during a steamy rally Sunday in a school gym, but it was clear she's more than a coat-holder for the Democratic presidential candidate.

When someone in the audience asked Michelle Obama why voters should vote for her husband, she walked confidently onto the stage, took the microphone and smoothly answered.

"He's a man who has put his values before his profit," she said. "He's not running for president because he wants to be president. That's sort of the irony in it. He's running for president because he believes we can do better as a country."

The line brought a standing ovation.

"I think maybe we should stop there," Barack Obama said.

But he took another question: How would Michelle Obama serve as first lady?

Returning to the stage and the microphone, she was a little less reverent.

"You may sit down," she told her husband.

Roars of laughter from the crowd.

"I come to this with a lot of interesting talents, but I think it would be unfair of me to say today what I would do in a couple of years," she continued. "I need to be prepared to do what the country needs me to do at the time.

1. Michelle Obama would be a different type of first lady
She is very independent, intelligent, and aware...that's why so many people like her.

3. Yes, she is but that's not why they like her because
Hillary is independent, intelligent and very much aware...but a lot of people don't like her. Michelle is totally different and has her own unique qualities which are hard to put your finger on. Maybe it's her down to earthiness. lol

5. "I come to this with a lot of interesting talents"
Not to nitpick, but shouldn't others decide this?

I like her a lot, but this is a little off-putting. Not a lot, but a little.

confident and assertive about their skills/talents (esp. African-American girls)...we don't think twice when men promote themselves and their strengths but women are expected to play demure and dumb...good for her that she's not trying to pretend she doesn't know how to do anything...if you don't believe in your own abilities, why should anyone else?

8. I understand that point
yes, self-confidence and a sense that you have something important to contribute is critical in this culture.

that's why it really doesn't bother me much that she says it - I admit it's nitpicking - and it's a fact that all candidates, male or female, do say essentially the same thing.

10. I have often thought this. And, Veneble, no problem it's okay to be
uncomfortable with the remark. But, she is trying to let people know she is a person who is accomplished and it may have come off bad.
As for Class and dignity, I have thought about this. A first couple that is attractive, accomplished, intelligent, stylish and classy and with dignity and decency. what a breath of fresh air.
