Obama's Big Advantage? He's Black.

By breaking the color barrier for the Presidency, like Louis Armstrong, Sammy Davis, Jackie Robinson, Sidney Poitier and Martin Luther King, Obama becomes a Folk Hero.

This makes him the darling of the Press and gives him a strong Teflon coating. In addition, by breaking the biggest color barrier on Earth, the Presidency of the United States, Obama goes beyond mere Folk Hero status and attains Super Folk Hero.

27% say they will never vote for a black, 24% for a woman, I think it was 35% for a Mormon and 53% for an atheist.

Fortunately, Obama is NOT a black woman Mormon atheist. Because he is just a black man, he has an excellent chance to romp over the Republicans, who will be cast as the Folk Villians in 2008 against Super Folk Hero.

This Folk Hero Status would also be granted to the female or Hispanic in the race if they had the charisma and skills to pull it off. But clearly they do not.

So besides the incredible skills and charisma of Obama, he has another terrific advantage:

He's black.

1. The right will use race and bigotry to plant doubt in voters minds...
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 10:19 AM by niceypoo
They will endlessly smear him as some kind of muslim extremist. That will be their swift boat.

The only fear I have with Obama is that he believes he is 'above the fray', and that he can find 'unity' with republicans. There is no unity with these people. They are bigots, they hate everybody. Republicans hate gays, the French, Black voters, liberals, immigrants, mexicans, foreigners, muslims...you name it. If they aren't narrow minded right wing bigots, they hate them. Their racist bigotry toward him would be loud, constant and vicious. His Kumbaya approach will blow up in Obama's face if he is the nominee. If he really believes he can find unity with these people he is in for a rude awakening.

3. You're wrong, 30% or more of Republicans are pretty moderate
especially in the Northeast, and have voted for blacks many times. The rabid racists never vote Dem anyhow so he doesn't lose anything.

Being black is a terrific advantage to Obama.

10. Keep believing that
Yeah, the republicans have such a good track record with black voters. Ask any Floridian or black voter from Ohio. Republicans just love black democrats.

If Obama supporters actually believe that republicans will embrach Obama because he is black then they are in for a shock. Holding on to a fantasy will only take you so far. That is where Kerry blew it. The Kumbaya congress we have right now is taking the approach of, "healing." How is that working out?

11. How is that?
Are you under the delusion that he is teflon because of his skin color? It all boils down to how Obama reacts. If he doesnt hit back hard, the doubt will be planted and he is toast, as happened to Kerry.

Please explain how Obama is teflon, this will be good.

13. Obama already has the best rapid response and has just defeated the
Hillary Smear Machine, which shows he can do it.

Plus because he is black and is breaking the color barrier for President, he is now a Super-Powered FOlk Hero for the Democrats, the first since Andrew Jackson in 1828.

It's because he's a black about to win the Presidency that makes him an SPFH and gives him a DOUBLE Teflon coating.

That means it will be the Republicans this time who have to deliver on substance, not the Democrats (although all of them would anyway).

It's just Obama's extra-special super advantage:

He's black.

21. The "Swift Boat" folks were invited on the cable news shows, their ads shown and given legitimacy.
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 04:42 PM by flpoljunkie
That's the difference. It is up to us, and other Democratic blogs, as well as the responsible print and cable media to call out the underground emails, i.e., "Obama attended a madrassa" and "Obama is a muslim smear." CNN debunked the "madrassa" lie right away, and there is no reason why they will not continue to do so.

8. They would smear Jesus (D). So what?
Bill Clinton never won VA, yet VA elected a black governor, Wilder. Before he won, Wilder had to put up with all the "We are dooooooooomed! No one will vote for a black man!" crap from Democrats too.

12. You missed my point entirely
It is all about how Obama fights back. I ultimately believe that the republicans would self destruct with the race card, as I have stated a hundred times on this board. It is Obamas Kumbaya approach I have a problem with. I also have a problem with, "he is teflon because he is black". I prefer substance.

6. I agree in general but you are WAY off on the data
Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 10:24 AM by dmallind
Atheists are as despised as you state, but blacks, women and mormons much less so. In fact the only group that even comes within loud hailing distance of the antipathy towards the rational in religious matters is gays at 43%.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/26611/Some-Americans-Reluctant-Vote-Mormon-72YearOld-Presidential-Candidates.aspx

Of course people lie, and some bigotries are less easy to admit to than others, so these are by no means hard numbers. Fortunately it's pretty intuitive that those who never would REALLY vote for a black man, 5% or not (much higher IMO), are far more likely to be against Democrats anyway. It's not that Obama has to get Klan or Aryan Brotherhood votes to win, or ever had any chance of getting them even if he were 100% Anglo himself.

17. I agree with you completely,
Yes there will be the whisper campaign, the undercurrent of racism.
But it will be ineffective. The bigotry vote is going to be canceled
out by the new energized voters, the independents voting democratic
for the first time, the youth vote, and most importantly the blacks
who have never voted before because they have been left out of the system.

When black people really start to trust this candidacy is for real. Then
the bigots better watch out. This is a candidacy that changes everything.

Don't forget how much drawing power that name has in American culture. The middle name alone should assure him the Presidency.

Edited on Thu Jan-03-08 05:25 PM by loveangelc
It is almost accepted fact that republican cosnervatives HATE hillary clinton. I live in a conservative state and whenever they run ads for republicans, they always make sure to emphasize a democrat being on board with Hillary Clinton, no matter what issue. And they ALWAYS emphasize the name Hillary Clinton, more than any other democrat.

therefore, no, I do not have a link; but anyone with half a brain knows hillary clinton ingites the right.

Nothing better than the uplifting, inspiring sounds of an "ex-gay" clown like Donnie McClurkin to get the people fired up and filled with the hate and ugliness of homophobia. Preach on, brother!
