. . .these are some desperate and pitiful folks. Everyone should remember when the the "do not call" list law was signed that it didn't apply to politicians and charities. But go ahead Clinton supporters don't let the truth get in the way of a good bash.

1. As I understand it, it's illegal to send robocalls to "Do Not Call" people. nt

11. Yeah, this is specifically about robo-calls, though.
According to this, Republicans stopped after they got complaints, and it seems that set up some confusion about legality.

Got the info below though -- looks legal to me.

3. So if the Obama campaign is allegedly breaking the law someone needs to alert the authorities. . .
. . .I doubt they are breaking any laws.

6. Political speech is protected
Unless something has changed in the law. I think "Do Not Call" people shouldn't be called, but it's not covered by the law as it first appeared, I do know that.

12. I get "robocalls" from politicians a lot. Didn't know it was illegal. Maybe it's a state law?
Because the politicians' names are in the robocalls, I would doubt that they are blatantly breaking the law.

A way around it, though, is to "hire" a marketing firm to do some "research" for so-and-so politician, so it's actually the marketing firm that is breaking the law?

15. Yeah, for robocalls it varies by state, I've learned.
They just have to identify who the call is promoting within 30 seconds; I guess some are saying his calls didn't give that info until 38 seconds into it. I don't see that as anything to jump up and down about.

16. Not true - politicals are allowed
We're on the "Do not call" list and we get lots of robo calls - some were actually cool. I liked the Caroline Kennedy call in 2004 to vote and a Kerry call in 2005 to invite people to a Corzine event he did. I got a Bill Clinton one too - but I forget for who - I think Menendez.

14. I think this dings both campaigns
It is legal but intrusive to make those calls, but even the Republicans backed off because people on that list didn't like it. If the Republicans see the importance of respecting New Hampshire voters expectations of privacy if they are on that list (even if that expectation was based on a wrong assumption) than Obama's campaign should also. Having said that the Clinton campaign put it's foot in it's mouth by making the wrong allegation about the legality of those calls. That was simply inept and blunts a minor side issue that played to their mild advantage and threatens to make it into a minor negative for them instead.
